About The Position

Altieri is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to design building mechanical systems in collaboration with other mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineers. The role is involved in all project phases, beginning with concept design and studies, and may include project management responsibilities. Projects include cultural, performing arts, educational, civic, park, and historic buildings. The engineer performs and reviews mechanical system calculations; lays out ductwork, piping, and equipment in Revit; selects equipment; prepares drawing sets and specifications; and designs life-safety systems. The role also supports construction administration, sustainability documentation, design coordination, client meetings, code compliance, and guidance for entry-level and project engineers. When applicable, project management duties include coordinating trades, serving as the primary client contact, managing budgets, schedules, and billing, preparing additional service requests, and overseeing construction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, architectural engineering, or a similar field.
  • 10 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Autodesk Revit.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Review and perform heating and cooling load, pipe and duct pressure, psychrometric, and ASHRAE Standard 55 and 62.1 calculations.
  • Use Revit 3D drafting software to lay out ductwork, piping, and equipment.
  • Produce drawing sets, including drawing notes, details, and single-line diagrams.
  • Select mechanical equipment, including boilers, chillers, and air handling units.
  • Apply knowledge of mechanical system types, including dust collection, kitchen exhaust, and steam systems, to design work.
  • Develop familiarity with control systems and sequences of operation.
  • Edit outline and book specifications to fit project needs.
  • Perform life-safety calculations and design, including elevator machine room exhaust, ASHRAE Standard 15, stair and elevator pressurization, and post-fire smoke purge systems.
  • Locate atrium exhaust equipment and design systems that maintain required fire and smoke ratings, including fire and smoke damper locations; place duct and equipment smoke detectors.
  • Review submittals, RFIs, contractor estimates, and potential change orders; attend construction meetings as required; and provide researched, technically correct responses to RFIs and project team questions.
  • Complete building certification documentation, such as LEED documentation; participate in sustainability meetings; and consider energy impacts in design.
  • Coordinate design with Altieri engineers across MEPF trades, clients, other consultants, and contractors; apply basic knowledge of other MEPF trades; and proactively troubleshoot to avoid conflicts.
  • Consider constructability and maintenance requirements in designs.
  • Participate in client meetings, respond to client requests within the contract agreement, and work with clients to identify alternative designs that support the architectural vision.
  • Use international and local building codes, energy codes, and ASHRAE handbooks to inform design and calculations; research alternatives to prescriptive design methods when necessary.
  • Provide guidance to entry-level and project engineers.
  • When applicable, coordinate projects across trades, serve as the primary client contact, manage budgets, schedules, and billing, prepare additional service requests, and oversee the construction process.
  • Perform additional tasks as requested.
