About The Position

Nusano is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its Sustaining Engineering team at its West Valley City, Utah facility. The engineer will support development of a heavy ion linear accelerator, beamlines, solid and gaseous target stations, and radiochemistry equipment and machinery. The role is primarily responsible for beamline assembly, installation, and ongoing support during commissioning and operating phases. The position works closely with design engineering, physics, operations, vendors, and internal resources to deliver and support beamline subsystems. The engineer will help refine designs and documentation, coordinate projects, evaluate equipment performance, and train staff in system assembly, disassembly, and troubleshooting. Work is conducted on the assembly floor, in the production facility, and in an office environment. The employee must be comfortable working as a radiation worker and must be able to lift, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • Related professional work experience in engineering design and assembly, new product integration, or manufacturing support engineering.
  • Demonstrated understanding of mechanical design.
  • Advanced knowledge and judgment in most of the following areas: high- or ultra-high-vacuum systems; water-cooling systems, including piping, valves, flow sensors, flow meters, fittings, and seals; pneumatic systems, including valves, actuators, tube bending, fittings, and seals; welding, machining, and mechanical assembly processes and techniques; 3D CAD design and drafting in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM; project management involving scope, cost, and schedule; and metrology, inspection, quality control, and manufacturing test methods.
  • Ability to interact and communicate efficiently with researchers, engineers, designers, machinists, and engineering technicians to provide a high level of customer service.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use basic hand tools for mechanical assembly, wiring, and plumbing.
  • Full proficiency with digital productivity tools, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Demonstrated analytical thinking and ability to learn rapidly.
  • Ability to lift, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfort working as a radiation worker.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical experience installing and commissioning precision scientific, mechanical, hydraulic, plumbing, or vacuum systems.
  • Experience setting up manufacturing cells, processes, and practices.
  • Rigging, forklift, or overhead crane operation experience.
  • Experience working with a quality program and quality standards.
  • Experience running and supervising small teams of technical personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble beamline components, including vacuum systems, magnets, beam diagnostics, and supporting utilities.
  • Collaborate with design engineering to refine designs and mechanical documentation.
  • Take ownership of delivering beamline subsystems.
  • Collaborate with physics and operations to meet accelerator performance and uptime needs.
  • Manage projects through efficient use of staff, schedule, and budget.
  • Participate in and refine tests to qualify and evaluate equipment performance.
  • Respond to questions concerning engineering design, assembly, and operation of beamline subsystems.
  • Provide oral and written project-status reports to project and upper-management stakeholders.
