About The Position

York Space Systems is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to turn complex design requirements into affordable-to-produce, easy-to-assemble designs for high-rate production using manufacturing best practices. The role supports mechanical design for spacecraft flight hardware and mechanical ground support equipment (MGSE), in a fast-paced environment. Aerospace-specific experience is desired but not required. The engineer will develop and evaluate designs, produce drawings and build documentation, coordinate across engineering and with programs, customers, suppliers, and test teams, and support design improvements and production. The position also includes checking and mentoring other engineers. It is based full-time in the Greenwood Village, Colorado office and does not support remote or hybrid work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field from an accredited university.
  • At least 4 years of experience as a mechanical design engineer.
  • Strong understanding of the requirements for high-quality mechanical systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in team environments.
  • Moderate experience with configuration control, the design-release lifecycle, and PLM.
  • Moderate experience with materials, joints, and bonding, and how these choices affect designs.
  • Moderate experience with manufacturing best practices for design tolerancing, fabrication methodologies, and assembly.
  • Excellent SolidWorks or similar CAD skills.
  • Ability to initiate work independently within a team environment, with strong leadership skills.
  • Able and willing to obtain and maintain U.S. security clearance.
  • Willingness to work full-time in the Greenwood Village, Colorado office; remote and hybrid work are not supported.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with space vehicle design and/or ground support equipment.
  • Strong experience in the lifecycle of spacecraft or similar development, including design, build, and test.
  • Experience with model-based definition and 3D PDF generation and checking.
  • Strong understanding of spacecraft mission considerations such as thermal loads, structural margin and resiliency, and off-gassing.
  • Strong background in engineering mechanical ground support equipment for the Space or Defense industry.
  • TS/SCI clearance is desired.
  • Aerospace-specific experience is desired but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer mechanical design solutions for spacecraft flight hardware and mechanical ground support equipment (MGSE).
  • Create designs that apply design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA) with rate manufacturing in mind.
  • Perform preliminary FEA, higher-level hand calculations, and fastener margin analyses to help ensure design feasibility.
  • Create component drawings with appropriate GD&T that can be produced affordably.
  • Develop assembly drawings, fabrication procedures, and build instructions in collaboration with the integration team.
  • Coordinate across engineering on clean-sheet designs and design improvements.
  • Interface with programs and end customers on high-level and detailed design needs and requirements.
  • Coordinate with test engineers to prepare and execute test plans as the mechanical engineering responsible engineer, and perform root-cause analyses when errors arise.
  • Interface with suppliers to produce designs and optimize them for cost and lead time.
  • Support peers through checking and collaboration to ensure best practices are implemented on team products.
  • Mentor and lead junior engineers within and outside the Mechanical Engineering discipline.
