About The Position

Air Relief is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer specializing in centrifugal compressor design, repair, and analysis. This role involves leading the analysis and recommending repairs for various manufacturers’ multi-stage centrifugal air compressors based on field data and disassembled components. The position covers the entire product lifecycle, including aerodynamic, rotating assembly, and structural components, as well as testing and manufacturing support. The role is within an agile, close-knit manufacturing, service, and engineering company in Mayfield, Kentucky, where the team environment ensures individual contributions directly impact the company's products and success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in mechanical design, with a strong focus on high-speed rotating equipment or turbomachinery.
  • Proven expertise in centrifugal compressor design, aerodynamic interfaces, and rotor dynamics.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks).
  • Proficiency with Geomagic DesignX modeling software.
  • Proficiency with Prophet21 business system software.
  • Deep understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree with a turbomachinery focus.
  • ISO or ASNT vibration analysis certification – CAT II or III.
  • Experience in a small-scale manufacturing or job-shop environment.
  • Knowledge of API standards (e.g., API 617) for centrifugal compressors.
  • Knowledge and use of coordinate measuring machines for component dimensional checks.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design of centrifugal compressors, impellers, casings, and rotor dynamics systems.
  • Coordinate the acquisition and analysis of spectral vibration data from machinery at customer jobsites.
  • Specify bearings, seals, couplings, and compressor skid materials suitable for high-speed rotating applications.
  • Partner closely with manufacturing teams (internal and 3rd party) to optimize designs for production and assembly.
  • Define test plans, oversee prototype testing, and analyze experimental data to refine designs.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineering staff.
