About The Position

MDS Engineering is a growing MEP engineering firm based in York, Pennsylvania, serving public and private sector clients across building systems, infrastructure, energy, and related markets. We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to provide technical leadership, project oversight, quality control, mentorship, and client support. This role is ideal for an experienced licensed engineer who can lead complex design efforts, guide junior and mid level staff, and help strengthen the firm’s mechanical engineering capabilities. This position will lead HVAC, plumbing, piping, energy, and building system design. Responsibilities include design, code compliance, peer reviews, QA/QC, multidisciplinary coordination, and construction phase support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field.
  • Professional Engineer license required.
  • 10 or more years of progressive mechanical engineering experience.
  • Strong experience with HVAC design, mechanical systems, plumbing systems, piping systems, energy code compliance, and construction documents.
  • Proven ability to lead projects and coordinate with multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Experience with technical reviews, QA/QC reviews, calculations, specifications, and code compliance evaluations.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem solving, leadership, and client relationship skills.
  • Ability to mentor junior and mid level staff.
  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, load calculation software, energy modeling tools, and Microsoft Office.

Nice To Haves

  • LEED AP, CEM, PMP, or similar professional credential.
  • Experience with aviation, government, education, commercial, institutional, healthcare, laboratory, industrial, residential, mixed use, or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with specialty mechanical systems, business development, proposals, client interviews, standards development, mentoring, and process improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead HVAC, plumbing, piping, and mechanical system design for commercial, institutional, government, education, aviation, mixed use, residential, industrial, and related projects.
  • Develop and review mechanical layouts, equipment selections, ventilation strategies, load calculations, energy code documentation, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Coordinate mechanical systems with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, technology, civil, owner, contractor, and consultant requirements.
  • Review system sizing, pressure loss calculations, ventilation, humidity control, thermal comfort, energy efficiency, constructability, and code compliance.
  • Support specialty systems including chilled water, heating water, steam, condensate, medical gas, process piping, domestic water, sanitary drainage, stormwater, and gas piping.
  • Perform peer reviews and QA/QC reviews of drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical deliverables.
  • Serve as the lead mechanical engineer and technical point of contact while managing deliverables, schedules, budgets, coordination needs, and client expectations.
  • Support meetings, site visits, construction administration, RFIs, submittmits, change evaluations, and field related technical questions.
  • Mentor junior engineers, designers, interns, and emerging technical staff.
  • Help develop standards, checklists, calculation tools, templates, training materials, proposals, scopes, and internal best practices.
