About The Position

York Space Systems is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to turn complex requirements into affordable-to-produce, easy-to-assemble designs suitable for high-rate production. The role covers mechanical design for spacecraft flight hardware and mechanical ground support equipment (MGSE), applying manufacturing best practices in a fast-paced environment. Aerospace experience is desired but not required. The engineer will work across design, analysis, documentation, production, integration, and test, coordinating with engineering teams, programs, customers, suppliers, and test engineers. The position is based full-time in York Space Systems’ Greenwood Village, Colorado office and does not support remote or hybrid work. Applicants must have permanent authorization to work in the United States and be able and willing to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field from an accredited university.
  • At least 4 years of experience as a mechanical design engineer.
  • Strong understanding of the requirements for high-quality mechanical systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in team environments.
  • Moderate experience with configuration control, design-release lifecycles, and product lifecycle management (PLM).
  • Moderate experience with materials, joints, and bonding, including how these choices affect designs.
  • Moderate experience with manufacturing best practices for design tolerancing, fabrication methodologies, and assembly.
  • Excellent SolidWorks or similar CAD skills.
  • Ability to initiate work independently within a team environment and demonstrate strong leadership skills.
  • Must be able and willing to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
  • Permanent authorization to work in the United States.
  • Willingness to work full-time in the Greenwood Village, Colorado office; remote and hybrid work are not supported.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with space vehicle design and/or ground support equipment.
  • Experience in the spacecraft or similar development lifecycle, including design, build, and test.
  • Experience with model-based definition and 3D PDF generation and checking.
  • Strong understanding of spacecraft mission considerations, including thermal loads, structural margin and resiliency, and off-gassing.
  • Strong background in engineering Mechanical Ground Support Equipment for the space or defense industry.
  • TS/SCI clearance is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer mechanical design solutions for spacecraft flight hardware and mechanical ground support equipment (MGSE).
  • Create designs that apply design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA) principles for rate manufacturing.
  • Perform preliminary finite element analysis (FEA), higher-level hand calculations, and fastener margin analyses to assess design feasibility.
  • Create component drawings with appropriate geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) that can be affordably produced.
  • Develop assembly drawings, fabrication procedures, and build instructions in coordination with the integration team.
  • Coordinate across engineering on clean-sheet designs and design improvements.
  • Interface with programs and end customers on high-level and detailed design needs and requirements.
  • Coordinate with test engineers to prepare and execute test plans as the mechanical engineering responsible engineer, and perform root cause analyses when errors arise.
  • Interface with suppliers to produce designs and optimize them for cost and lead time.
  • Support peers through checking and collaboration to ensure best practices are implemented across team products.
  • Mentor and lead junior engineers within and outside the Mechanical Engineering discipline.
