Senior Mechanical Engineer

Motorola Solutions•Schaumburg, IL

About The Position

Motorola Solutions is hiring a senior-level product design and development engineer for its Site RF and Access value stream, which develops and maintains infrastructure products for two-way radio communications in Astro, Tetra, and PCR systems. The engineer will contribute primarily as a mechanical engineer on large or complex team projects and as an individual contributor on smaller assignments. The role also supports method and process improvements for existing product lines. During project development, the engineer works closely with other engineering groups, suppliers, and factories in Mexico, Malaysia, or Elgin, Illinois. Some travel may be required, although the posting's Travel Requirements field states None. The position involves designing and analyzing mechanical systems, components, and assemblies; evaluating designs against customer needs and product specifications; supporting suppliers and manufacturing; and contributing to prototype builds, verification testing, documentation, and product releases. The work covers components and materials including cast metals, sheet metal and stampings, injection-molded plastics, compression-molded rubbers, cables and connectors, and rigid and flexible printed circuit boards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME).
  • At least 3 years of product development experience designing and developing mechanics for highly reliable electronics products.
  • Hands-on experience and high proficiency with Creo Parametric (Pro/Engineer) 3D modeling and surfacing software, or an equivalent tool, for designing complex components and assemblies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform hand calculations or FEA calculations for stress and thermal analysis.
  • Ability to work autonomously and effectively with engineers in mechanical and other disciplines, including electrical engineering, industrial design, product marketing, and manufacturing.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent design projects.
  • Ability to write concise and comprehensive design and test reports and clearly summarize complex technical concepts.
  • Good writing and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing cast metals, sheet metal and stampings, injection-molded plastics, compression-molded rubbers, cables and connectors, and rigid and flexible printed circuit boards.
  • Knowledge of design for assembly (DFA) and design for manufacturing (DFM) requirements.
  • Experience with tolerance analysis and its effects on design; 6-sigma design methodology is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in finite element analysis for structural and heat-transfer applications.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare concept and prototype designs of mechanical systems and perform hands-on design and analysis of parts and components.
  • Ensure designs meet customer requirements and expectations, reliability and robustness requirements, manufacturing processes, and safety guidelines.
  • Design and conduct experiments using statistical tools and techniques to confirm analyses, and evaluate new or existing designs against product specifications.
  • Work with suppliers and commodity teams to meet cost and lead-time goals for tooling and piece parts.
  • Model complex components and assemblies using advanced 3D CAD tools, and interpret and generate 2D drawings according to mechanical drafting standards.
  • Account for tolerances and their effects on design.
  • Set up and maintain bills of materials and release mechanical prints.
  • Support prototype and pilot builds.
  • Perform mechanical verification tests against product specifications and write test reports.
  • Compile information for user manuals and instruction sheets.
  • Work with engineering groups, suppliers, and factories during project development.
  • Support method and process improvements on existing product lines.
  • Manage multiple concurrent design projects and produce concise, comprehensive design and test reports.
