Senior Mechanical Engineer, Product Development

KnightscopeSunnyvale, CA
$170,000 - $185,000Onsite

About The Position

Knightscope is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their product development team. This role will be responsible for mechanical engineering across multiple hardware programs, including H1, K1, and K7. The engineer will own mechanical design, component integration, and enclosure development from early prototype through production readiness. They will collaborate with electrical, software, and systems engineers in a fast-paced, gate-driven product development environment, set technical direction, and significantly influence the product portfolio. This is an ownership-driven position requiring a senior, hands-on engineer comfortable with ambiguity, independent work, and driving decisions across disciplines. The role involves owning the mechanical scope of hardware products, including component evaluation, enclosure design, system integration, thermal management, and test support. The ideal candidate has experience integrating electronics into physical systems and is familiar with various manufacturing processes. They should be adept at moving from CAD to prototype, adapting to evolving designs, and thriving in dynamic environments.

Requirements

  • B.S or M.S degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience in product development, with demonstrated independent ownership of electromechanical hardware programs from concept through production.
  • Experience taking multiple hardware products from concept through production.
  • Experience designing mechanical systems that integrate electronics
  • Proficiency in CAD tools (Solidworks, Fusion360)
  • Familiarity with thermal design and management in compact, sealed enclosures
  • Hands-on prototyping experience; comfortable working in a fast-paced, early-stage program environment with ambiguous and incomplete requirements and aggressive milestones
  • Experience with different manufacturing techniques and materials.
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills; ability to work effectively with electrical, software, and systems engineering teams
  • Have a roll-up-the-sleeves, can-do attitude, where no task is too menial for you.
  • Proven ability to work independently and set technical direction; experience mentoring engineers a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with soft goods, wearables, or body-worn products preferred

Responsibilities

  • Drive mechanical design and integration across the H1, K1, and K7 programs through all phases of product development
  • Evaluate and integrate electrical components across a range of product form factors.
  • Develop enclosure, mounting, and packaging solutions for electronic components, including compute, sensors, and power systems
  • Identify and manage thermal, structural, and ergonomic constraints in electromechanical systems
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, software, and system engineering teams to resolve cross-functional tradeoffs
  • Support development of test plans, fixtures, and validation activities to ensure product performance and reliability
  • Work with external partners and vendors as needed to support design and manufacturing
  • Contribute to establishing scalable product development processes and best practices
  • Set mechanical engineering direction across programs and mentor junior engineers.
