Sr. Mechanical Engineer/Designer
About The Position
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer to support the design and development of complex mechanical and electromechanical products and assemblies. The role creates detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and technical documentation from engineering concepts, sketches, and specifications. The successful candidate will have strong mechanical design experience, advanced SolidWorks proficiency, and a thorough understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, sheet metal fabrication, and welding. This is an individual contributor position with no direct supervisory responsibilities. Occasional travel may be required. Candidates should be comfortable working independently while collaborating closely with engineering and technical teams. Strong problem-solving skills, sound technical judgment, and the ability to meet project deadlines are essential.
Requirements
- Technical Associate degree in Mechanical Design, Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field with 6–8 years of relevant experience, or 8–10 years of relevant experience without a degree.
- At least 5 years of experience using SolidWorks/EPDM or Creo/Windchill.
- Current experience with SolidWorks 2015 or newer, including sheet metal, weldments, and machined parts.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of mechanical design principles.
- Demonstrated experience designing machined and fabricated assemblies.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including machining, welding, forming, and fabrication techniques.
- Experience developing engineering drawings and documenting assemblies containing both mechanical and electrical components.
- Familiarity with CAD data management systems and engineering documentation practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and SharePoint.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with engineering and technical teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills, sound technical judgment, and ability to meet project deadlines.
Nice To Haves
- Experience designing RF waveguides and waveguide assemblies.
- Extensive experience with sheet metal design and fabrication.
- Experience designing structural weldments.
- Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Model-Based Definition (MBD).
- Experience with SolidWorks Routing or Creo Routing, including initial setup.
- Experience configuring and maintaining SolidWorks Toolbox or equivalent component libraries.
- Experience using embedded simulation tools.
- Familiarity with military and government engineering standards.
- Experience supporting mechanical design projects involving complex communication equipment or electromechanical systems.
Responsibilities
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models, mechanical drawings, assembly layouts, and manufacturing documentation using SolidWorks and other CAD tools.
- Translate engineering concepts, rough sketches, and technical specifications into accurate, production-ready designs.
- Design and document complex mechanical and electromechanical assemblies, including machined components, sheet metal parts, and weldments.
- Create, maintain, and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs), including multilevel assembly structures.
- Use CAD and Product Data Management (PDM/PLM) systems to maintain engineering drawings, models, BOMs, and supporting technical documentation.
- Collaborate with engineers and cross-functional teams to plan, design, test, and document mechanical hardware.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable industry and military standards, including ANSI, ISO, ASME, IEEE, and MIL-STD.
- Review engineering drawings and designs for accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance with established specifications.
- Support engineering estimates, design improvements, and new product development initiatives.
- Assist with technical documentation, including test plans, procedures, reports, and engineering deliverables.
- Work with vendors and internal stakeholders to obtain technical information and resolve design challenges.
- Identify opportunities to improve product performance, manufacturing efficiency, and design quality.
- Maintain compliance with applicable government regulations, export controls, and ITAR requirements.
