Job Summary Working collaboratively with a diverse team of individuals to develop innovative and sustainable energy systems, and high-performance buildings. Within a dynamic design team, the Senior Mechanical Designer plays a fundamental role in leading the team to design, engineer, and produce heating, cooling, plumbing, and low-carbon energy systems for different building types and applications within Institutional Buildings The Senior Designer performs tasks and delivers projects under the guidance of, and per the instructions provided by, the Associate and/or Principal-in-Charge, including but not limited to performing engineering calculations, drafting, coordinating with the design team, equipment suppliers, constructors, and clients, and delegating design work to Junior Design Staff to put together design packages to submit to the client.

Requirements

  • Able to read Architectural, Structural, Mechanical and Electrical drawings with minimal supervision.
  • Able to apply prescriptive requirements of plumbing, building, and sprinkler codes.
  • Experience with schematic design, equipment selection, and 2D AutoCAD and 3D Revit.
  • Basic understanding of global sustainability issues and current best practices in sustainable building design.
  • Knowledge of sustainability frameworks, such as Passive House, Zero Carbon Building, LEED.
  • Experience performing accurate and detailed site surveys.

  • 5+ years design experience in HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems.
  • University degree, college/technology diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Able to work autonomously with Junior Design Staff to deliver simple projects, on time and within budget.
  • Able to contribute to workload planning of design team.
  • Able to perform higher-level design tasks independently and effectively, including developing Schematic Designs, collaborating with Energy Analyst to develop energy and carbon analyses.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T.) are highly preferred.
  • LEED® or Passive House Accreditation is an asset.
  • Experience in Passive House, Aquatics, or District Energy projects is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and review heating, cooling, and ventilation load calculations (HAP, TAS, Excel, etc.).
  • Prepare Mechanical and Plumbing schematic design layout and final design.
  • Create and maintain mechanical equipment schedule and motorlist.
  • Review and prepare mechanical specifications.
  • Prepare or confirm all mechanical equipment and motorlist selections using the firm’s selection procedures.
  • Review shop drawings, Requests for Information (RFIs), and other construction changes.
  • Coordinate mechanical requirements with other disciplines involved in the project design team.
  • Direct and supervise Junior and Intermediate Designers within your team to ensure the delivery of quality projects.
  • Coordinate or confirm service requirements/connections with the respective utility and/or municipal agencies.
  • Assist with fee proposal preparation.
  • Maintain good client relations.
