About The Position

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer reports to a Senior Manager of Mechanical Design Engineering and contributes to developing, stabilizing, and scaling da Vinci robotic platforms. The role designs components, makes decisions aligned with program goals, and delivers engineering solutions supporting minimally invasive care. The engineer designs components and produces mechanical drawings for regulated, volume-manufacturing environments. Work may include sheet metal enclosures, weldments, and injection-molded plastic. The role also involves engineering analyses, rapid prototyping and iteration, production troubleshooting, and collaboration with manufacturing on assembly tooling, fixtures, and instructions. The position follows a set schedule with at least four days on-site per week in Sunnyvale. Work may include extended periods of computer-based design and analysis, occasional lab work involving prototype assembly and mechanical testing, and occasional travel to supplier and manufacturing sites. The employee must be able to lift and handle 25 pounds.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree, 6 years with a master's degree, or 3 years with a Ph.D.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar engineering discipline.
  • Experience with machine design; robot or mechanical systems design experience is preferred within this qualification.
  • Experience with ASME Y14.5 GD&T.
  • Experience using CAD and creating technical drawings.
  • Comfort with product development lifecycle phases including design, implementation, debugging, verification, qualification, and transfer.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes including castings, plastic injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, and machining.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work in lab environments, including prototype assembly, mechanical testing, and safe use of standard mechanical tools and fixtures.
  • Ability to lift and handle 25 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Surgical product experience.
  • SolidWorks experience.
  • Deep experience designing electronics enclosures in sheet metal and/or structural sheet metal.
  • Proficiency in structural or thermal FEA, tolerance stacks, or other advanced analysis tools for designing components or assemblies.
  • Experience in regulated industries such as medical devices, aerospace, or automotive, with working knowledge of standards and documentation frameworks such as ISO 13485, FDA QSR, IEC 60601, ISO 14971, ASTM standards, DHF, FMEA, and V&V protocols.
  • Demonstrated effective collaboration with cross-functional teams such as system analysts, field or clinical engineers, human factors, industrial design, and UI design.
  • Experience with design processes including Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEA) and/or synthesizing design requirements for systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design components and produce mechanical drawings for volume manufacturing in a regulated environment.
  • Perform detailed engineering analyses, such as tolerance stacks, process simulation, and thermal or structural FEA, to ensure assembly fit, form, and function.
  • Rapidly develop and iterate full-scale prototypes that satisfy design requirements.
  • Support production by troubleshooting process and component problems and serving as a primary troubleshooter for line-down issue recovery.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to create product assembly tooling, fixtures, and instructions.
  • Drive design decisions that align with program goals and deliver engineering solutions for da Vinci robotic platforms.
