About The Position

To perform major and minor mechanical repair to automotive, diesel and other power-driven equipment; and to provide technical staff assistance to other mechanical personnel. This is the advanced journey level in the Mechanic series. Positions assigned to this class can be distinguished from lower-level classes in the series by the difficulty and complexity of the mechanics; repairs assigned. Incumbents assigned to this class are expected to perform the full range of advanced mechanical work with a minimum of supervision including major engine repairs and general overhauls.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas and diesel-powered equipment.
  • Knowledge of operating and repair characteristics of the entire range of City owned light and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Ability to perform advanced journey level equipment mechanical work including the troubleshooting of equipment for both major and minor work.
  • Ability to work effectively in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
  • Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment with skill.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Three years of experience performing automotive maintenance and repair work.
  • High School Diploma or GED supplemented by technical training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel-power equipment.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within three months, a valid Texas Class B CDL.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the more complex inspection, diagnosis, and mechanical repairs powered maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Overhaul, repair, and adjust engine, transmission, differentials, and clutches.
  • Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, or oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
  • Perform field or shop inspections of heavy and light equipment to determine repair needs or estimate cost of repairs.
  • Tune-up engines, replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting fuel delivery systems.
  • Prepare and replace such components generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches.
  • May assist in fabricating and modifying parts and equipment.
  • Maintain work, time, and material records on assigned work.
  • May perform welding structural changes on equipment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
