About The Position

The Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive, language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21. This is a 12-month position in the maintenance department of the Maryland School for the Deaf – Frederick Campus. This position is designated as Essential Personnel. GRADE ASTD10 LOCATION OF POSITION MSD, Frederick, Campus, 101 Clarke Place, Frederick, MD 21705 Main Purpose of Job The Maintenance Mechanic Senior performs advanced level of work for the maintenance of buildings and agency grounds. Assigns and leads maintenance tasks to semi-skilled and unskilled workers. Conducts final inspections of work performed by semi-skilled staff to ensure compliance with safety standards and trade pest practices. Performs general maintenance tasks such as construction, preventative maintenance, improvements and minor repairs to buildings, fixtures and mechanical equipment, grounds and roadways. Calculates material requirements and estimates labor time for repair projects; maintains detailed maintenance logs and equipment history records.

Requirements

  • Eighth grade education.
  • Four years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades, three years must be in the trades of electricity, plumbing, steam fitting, refrigeration or air conditioning.
  • Candidates may substitute additional experience in any of the maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required education.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a major in Building Maintenance or a related field for up to three years of the required general experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
  • Possession of a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in facilities maintenance and/or trade experience.
  • Willing to learn American Sign Language.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs. or more.
  • Able to assist with snow removal on the campus.

Responsibilities

  • Performs scheduled maintenance and minor repairs on critical building systems, including HVAC, boilers, and pumps. This role involves technical upkeep, such as lubricating components and replacing filters, while maintaining clean mechanical spaces.
  • Conducts daily inspections of the physical plant and utility operations to ensure equipment reliability and a safe environment for all facility occupants.
  • Performs plumbing and heating repairs, including repairing fixtures, unclogging drains, and replacing lavatory hardware.
  • Diagnoses complex system failures, identifies root causes, and leads semi-skilled workers in equipment installations and repairs to ensure proper facility operation.
  • Perform carpentry repairs including but not limited to repair furniture, move, change or construct interior walls, frame drywall, hinge doors, replace windows and window panes, install cabinets.
  • Apply finish and/or paint to completed projects.
  • Perform masonry functions to interior or exterior functions which may include repairs to cracks and imperfections in sheetrock, block walls, concrete slabs, concrete walkways and asphalt paving.
  • Performs advanced electrical troubleshooting using voltmeters and ohmmeters to interpret circuitry issues.
  • Check voltage polarity and assist with troubleshooting electrical wiring problems.
  • Assist with the installation of new electrical conduit, wiring and switches.
  • Leads and assists semi-skilled and unskilled workers with electrical installation, repairs and troubleshooting.
  • Perform ground maintenance functions which may include mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, mulching, weeding and watering.
  • Clean walkways, building surfaces, window wells, gutters.
  • Snow and ice removal.
  • Maintain and service equipment.
  • May inspect buildings and grounds for adherence to institutional safety and sanitary regulations.
  • Trains, assigns work, inspects and provides immediate guidance and assistance to team members (semi-skilled employees).
  • Perform other duties that may be required and/or as directed.
