Senior Materials Engineer

Albers Aerospace•Cincinnati, OH

About The Position

Albers Aerospace is seeking a skilled, detail-oriented Materials Engineer to join its product development and engineering team. The role evaluates, selects, develops, and tests materials—including metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites—to meet mechanical, thermal, and chemical requirements. The engineer works with cross-functional teams to optimize product designs and manufacturing processes, investigate material failures, and develop material formulations that improve durability, safety, and efficiency. The position also represents Albers Aerospace on-site at the customer facility, manages onboarding for new team members, supports the development of training products for new engineers, and may lead small engineering teams on larger projects. Duties may change or expand based on business demands.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 2–5 years of practical experience in materials testing, research and development, or manufacturing support; experience requirements vary by seniority level.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Secret security clearance.
  • Hands-on familiarity with material characterization tools, such as microscopy, DMA, DSC, FTIR, or TGA testing.
  • Strong command of structure-property-processing relationships in materials.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, mathematical modeling, or simulation software.
  • Strong analytical thinking, collaborative problem-solving, and written and verbal communication skills for presenting findings to stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in the field or a related area.
  • Active security clearance.
  • Familiarity with project management principles.

Responsibilities

  • Review engineering plans and performance targets to recommend cost-effective, high-performing materials based on factors such as weight, strength, cost, and operating environment.
  • Plan, conduct, and oversee laboratory testing, including tensile, thermal, corrosion, and microstructure analysis.
  • Lead root-cause investigations of material failures, component wear, and defects in manufacturing or field use, and implement solutions to prevent recurrence.
  • Work with manufacturing and quality teams to refine production methods such as heat treating, welding, surface coating, and molding to reduce scrap and improve throughput.
  • Establish and maintain material specifications, approved materials lists, test protocols, and engineering reports.
  • Write technical reports and present findings to stakeholders.
  • Partner with raw material vendors and suppliers to conduct technical audits, review material quality-control data, and qualify alternative sourcing options.
  • Represent Albers Aerospace on-site at the customer facility.
  • Manage onboarding activities for new team members.
  • Mentor and support development of training products for new engineers.
  • May lead small engineering teams supporting larger projects.
