About The Position

The Process Development & Efficiency Section of the Materials and Process Engineering Department is looking for a Materials Engineer to join their team in Andover, MA. This role is to support program process development, special process support, and production activities. A qualified candidate will have experience in evaluating materials and processes used within a product design and/or manufacturing. This position will offer a qualified candidate the opportunity to support material selections during design, development, and manufacturing of hardware, and support special process activities associated with a wide range of product applications. The role will involve evaluation of a variety of materials and validation and verification that materials and processes used on product to meet design and program requirements. Tasks will require critical thinking to solve challenging problems and careful attention to detail on procedures and documentation of results. Collaboration with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, subject matter experts, and suppliers is required. A candidate must be able to manage and coordinate a wide variety of simultaneous tasks within set schedule requirements. Travel, both domestic and international, is expected to be up to approximately 25% of the time.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 4 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 2 years experience.
  • Experience in material qualification, analysis, testing, design or development (material selections)
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: metal alloy systems, organic and inorganic coatings, corrosion control and protection, or additive manufacturing.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of work area typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience.
  • Practical to substantial knowledge of RTX projects, programs or systems with the ability to make enhancements and leverage in daily work.
  • Engineering/Other Technical Positions: Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
  • Active and existing security clearance required after day 1

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science and Engineering
  • Experience working on programs, projects, or products associated with the Defense Industry
  • Experience working with engineering drawings
  • Experience working with and evaluation of suppliers performing special manufacturing processes (as mentioned in “What You Will Do”)
  • Experience with mechanical and/or chemical analysis methods and characterization techniques
  • Experience related to Material Review Boards, Material and Process Change Boards, Risk Boards, and Engineering Review Boards
  • Experience with project milestones such as preliminary design reviews and critical design reviews
  • Ability to write concise technical reports summarizing analyses
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and complete scientific based projects including failure analysis and obsolescence investigations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, planning and time management skills
  • ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
  • Experience with corrosion fundamentals and mitigation techniques

Responsibilities

  • Evaluation of materials and processes based on conformance to specifications and design and performance requirements
  • Supporting product production and supplier support activities
  • Providing evaluation and resolution to technical, operational, and supplier problems related to materials and processes
  • Participate in analysis and documentation of technical positions for alternate materials, obsolescence, and failure analysis
  • Support special processes in one or more of the following areas: Painting, Plating, Welding, Brazing, Heat Treating, Bonding/adhesives, Polymers and Plastics, Non-Destructive Testing, Additive Manufacturing
