Senior Marine Structural Engineer

RINA•Boston, MA
•$135,000 - $210,000

About The Position

RINA is hiring a Senior Marine Structural Engineer for its Plant Engineering Division, based in Houston, Texas; Sunrise/Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Boston, Massachusetts; or Chicago/Lisle, Illinois. The role leads marine structural engineering for berth and waterfront infrastructure from concept development through construction and handover. It includes selecting structural systems, designing berthing and mooring structures, specifying and procuring marine equipment, and supervising piling and structural construction on site. The engineer seals permit and construction drawings for berth structures. The role covers structural analysis and design, including berthing energy and fender selection, mooring analysis and hardware selection, pile capacity and drivability analysis, design to applicable structural codes, marine durability, fatigue and serviceability, and safety features. It also involves evaluating structural alternatives, supporting USACE Section 408 review, leading detailed design, preparing calculations and specifications, evaluating vendors, overseeing construction quality and testing, and completing project closeout documentation. The position requires an active Texas Professional Engineer license and at least 10 years of marine structural engineering experience with pile-supported waterfront structures, including construction involvement. Experience with hurricane-exposed Gulf Coast waterfronts and soft coastal clays, liquid bulk or barge terminals, and USACE permit drawing and submittal requirements is sought. Travel up to 10% may be required, including visits to client offices, fabrication yards, operating plants, and construction sites. Compensation is $135,000–$210,000, commensurate with education and experience.

Requirements

  • Active Texas Professional Engineer license in civil or structural engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years of marine structural engineering experience with pile-supported waterfront structures, including involvement during construction.
  • Experience on hurricane-exposed Gulf Coast waterfronts and in soft coastal clays.
  • Experience with liquid bulk or barge terminals.
  • Experience with USACE permit drawing standards and permit submittal requirements.
  • Ability to lead technical problem-solving and support decision-making in complex engineering environments.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Collaborative working style and a solution-driven mindset.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary project teams and independently manage and assign tasks to meet client requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% based on business needs and meet client site safety and access requirements, including use of required personal protective equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead marine structural engineering for berth and waterfront infrastructure from concept development through construction and handover.
  • Select structural systems and design berthing and mooring structures.
  • Select fenders based on berthing energy and PIANC guidance, and design fender panels, chains, and supports.
  • Perform mooring analyses and select hardware in accordance with UFC 4-159-03 and OCIMF practices, including quick-release hooks and capstans.
  • Design piles for axial and lateral capacity; perform p-y and t-z analyses, group-effect assessments, and drivability evaluations.
  • Design structures to applicable standards, including ASCE 7, AISC 360, ACI 318, and UFC 4-152-01, accounting for hurricane wind and flood loads.
  • Address marine durability through corrosion allowances, coatings, cathodic protection, concrete cover, and mix design for saltwater exposure.
  • Assess fatigue and serviceability of fender and hook supports, walkways, pipe supports, and access structures.
  • Design or specify structural safety features such as access ladders, escape routes, lighting, and navigation aids.
  • Coordinate structural engineering inputs and outputs with structural and pile analysis software, mooring analysis software, and the project CAD or BIM environment.
  • Evaluate berth structural system alternatives, develop preliminary sizing, define overwater coverage and structural footprint, and prepare structural analyses for USACE Section 408 review.
  • Lead detailed design of dolphins, platforms, walkways, and bulkheads; prepare construction drawings, calculations, and technical specifications; and perform constructability analysis.
  • Prepare material take-offs and specifications, and evaluate vendors for piles, fenders, bollards, and loading equipment.
  • Prepare technical specifications, material take-offs, pile schedules, and bills of quantities for piles, fenders, bollards, quick-release hooks, and fittings.
  • Develop long-lead procurement strategies for piles and fender systems that align delivery windows with the construction schedule.
  • Perform technical vendor evaluations; review vendor drawings and calculations, factory acceptance documentation, and test certificates.
  • Review piling method statements, hammer selection, and pile-driving criteria, including refusal and set criteria.
  • Supervise pile driving and structural erection, including drivability analysis, testing, welding, concrete quality, and tolerance checks.
  • Supervise and interpret dynamic pile testing using PDA and CAPWAP, as well as static load tests when performed.
  • Inspect welding, splices, coatings, cathodic protection installation, concrete placement, curing and testing in marine conditions, and grouting of pile connections.
  • Verify survey records for pile position, verticality, batter, and structural tolerances.
  • Review temporary works involving barge-mounted cranes, templates, access, and lifting plans.
  • Assess nonconformances, develop repair designs, and provide field engineering support.
  • Support load testing and commissioning of mooring and fender equipment.
  • Prepare as-built dimensional records and structural documentation, and develop inspection and maintenance manuals with inspection intervals and acceptance criteria.
  • Seal permit and construction drawings for berth structures.
  • Work with multidisciplinary project teams and independently manage and assign tasks needed to complete structural work in accordance with client requirements.
