About The Position

1X is building humanoid robots for use in homes. The Actuators Manufacturing team develops the processes and production systems behind the actuators that enable NEO to move precisely and safely. This role makes actuators producible at scale, reliably and repeatedly, at a cost that supports deployment in homes. The engineer owns critical processes from prototype through production, including machining, assembly, inspection, and validation, and helps turn new manufacturing solutions into dependable production systems. The role partners with design, quality, supply chain, and production teams. It provides manufacturing input during design reviews, develops and qualifies production equipment and processes, and establishes end-of-line functional testing and traceability. The position is hands-on, with work alongside technicians on the production floor, and uses data-driven methods to improve safety, yield, quality, throughput, cost, cycle time, and scrap. The stated compensation range is $140,000–$190,000 plus equity. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage; paid time off, company holidays, and parental leave; a 401(k) plan with company match; FSA and HSA options; commuter benefits; disability and life insurance; an Employee Assistance Program; and onsite snacks and catered lunches. 1X is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, or Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of manufacturing, process, or test engineering experience on electromechanical products with a bachelor’s degree, or at least 3 years with a master’s degree.
  • Experience developing and improving assembly processes for motors, actuators, or other tight-tolerance electromechanical systems.
  • Track record of taking a process or piece of equipment from concept through commissioning, validation, and production release.
  • Experience with CAD, engineering drawings, GD&T, and tolerance stack-ups for precision mechanical interfaces.
  • Demonstrated ability to qualify processes and lead root-cause analysis using DOE, MSA/GR&R, SPC, and process capability.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with vacuum potting.
  • Experience with electric motor manufacturing processes such as coil winding, lamination stack assembly, magnet installation, welding, molding, impregnation, or resin and adhesive dispense.
  • Experience with automated or semi-automated equipment, PLC-controlled systems, and machine vision inspection.
  • Exposure to high-volume automation, robotic material handling, and precision gauging.

Responsibilities

  • Own actuator manufacturing processes from prototype builds through production release, including accountability for safety, first-pass yield, quality, and throughput.
  • Partner with design engineering in design reviews, provide DFM, DFA, and DFT feedback, assess tolerances against demonstrated process capability, and drive design changes for volume production.
  • Build and qualify equipment, fixtures, tooling, gauging, and automated workstations for actuator assembly.
  • Use DOE, MSA/GR&R, SPC, and process capability studies to validate processes before release.
  • Deliver end-of-line functional testing and traceability, linking station-level pass/fail data to each actuator’s process history.
  • Reduce cost, cycle time, and scrap through automation, line balancing, and root-cause corrective action.
  • Develop PFMEAs, control plans, and work instructions for production.
  • Develop manufacturing methods at production stations alongside technicians and troubleshoot on the floor.
  • Lead root-cause problem solving and establish controls that sustain improvements.
  • Communicate and coordinate across design, quality, controls, supply chain, and production.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Generous paid time off, company holidays, and parental leave.
  • 401(k) plan with company match: 100% on the first 3% of contributions and 50% on the next 2%.
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA) options.
  • Commuter benefits for transit and parking.
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance and life insurance.
  • Employee Assistance Program for mental health, financial, and personal support.
  • Onsite snacks and catered lunches.
  • Equity.
