About The Position

Redwood Materials is seeking a Senior Manager for Software Test & Validation to build and lead engineering teams responsible for software and hardware validation, manufacturing test software, site commissioning tools, and fleet data analytics for preventive and predictive maintenance. The role supports Redwood’s hardware and software portfolio from R&D bring-up through volume manufacturing and long-term field operations, connecting software development, factory production, and grid reliability. The position leads the architecture and scaling of Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) infrastructure for power-conversion stages and site-level controllers. It also oversees custom HIL hardware and virtual plant models, and integrates automated validation suites into CI/CD pipelines as release gates for production-bound software. The Senior Manager will lead development of manufacturing test and end-of-line functional test software, including systems for firmware flashing, hardware calibration, serialization, and automated diagnostics. The role also owns field commissioning tools for energy storage deployments and fleet-wide telemetry and analytics systems to identify degradation and emerging faults before they cause unplanned downtime. This hands-on technical leadership role includes recruiting, mentoring, and leading a multidisciplinary engineering team, as well as partnering with power electronics controls, embedded firmware, hardware engineering, manufacturing operations, and field service teams. The position is based in Redwood Materials’ San Francisco office and follows an onsite work model.

Requirements

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or a BS with equivalent depth.
  • 10+ years of industry experience in software validation, HIL simulation, manufacturing test, and fleet reliability analytics for complex hardware systems.
  • 5+ years leading technical engineering teams.
  • Proven experience architecting real-time simulation environments such as Typhoon HIL, Opal-RT, or dSPACE for power electronics converters and distributed system or site controllers.
  • Experience building and deploying automated factory test software, including ICT, FCT, or EOL testing, hardware bring-up utilities, and field commissioning frameworks across hardware product lifecycles.
  • Expert-level Python proficiency, including test automation and predictive modeling tools such as Pytest, Pandas, and SciPy.
  • Working fluency in Rust and C/C++ to inspect, instrument, and debug low-level firmware and application code.
  • Experience designing automated CI/CD pipelines for HIL targets, using Docker, and building scalable time-series telemetry architectures for fleet health monitoring.
  • Comfort operating in high-voltage power electronics lab environments and using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and power analyzers.
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols including CAN/CAN-FD, Ethernet, Modbus, and SPI.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience validating grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems, utility-interactive inverters, or mixed-chemistry or second-life EV battery installations against UL 1741, UL 1973, and IEEE 1547 standards.
  • Experience building prognostic algorithms that correlate factory end-of-line baseline signatures with field telemetry to predict remaining useful life of power electronics or energy storage components.
  • Experience designing custom automated fault-injection hardware and breakout PCB interfaces for multi-rack HIL testbeds.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the architecture and scaling of SIL and HIL infrastructure for power-conversion stages and multi-asset, site-level controllers.
  • Oversee custom signal-conditioning interface hardware, fault-injection panels, and high-fidelity virtual plant models for testing embedded firmware and site software.
  • Integrate automated SIL and HIL regression suites into containerized CI/CD pipelines as release gates for production-bound software.
  • Lead development of automated manufacturing test software and end-of-line functional test frameworks for multiple hardware product lines.
  • Build firmware flashing, hardware calibration, serialization, and automated pass/fail diagnostic systems that scale from prototype builds to high-volume production.
  • Architect and deliver automated field commissioning tools to verify hardware-software wiring and communications and conduct site acceptance testing.
  • Lead fleet-wide data analytics and time-series observability pipelines that use field telemetry to support preventive and predictive maintenance.
  • Develop health-monitoring models and anomaly-detection algorithms to identify component degradation, efficiency shifts, and battery state-of-health trends.
  • Recruit, mentor, and lead validation, test automation, manufacturing software, and data/reliability engineers.
  • Partner with power electronics controls, embedded firmware, hardware engineering, manufacturing operations, and field service teams to connect factory test results, HIL models, and field maintenance actions.
