About The Position

This is a senior engineering leadership role responsible for defining and scaling the quality engineering system across multiple workstreams. The role translates business strategy into a clear technical strategy, establishing the architecture, standards, and engineering practices that enable quality at scale. The Senior Manager, Quality Engineering is accountable for outcomes within a workstream and for ensuring the entire QE system consistently produces high-quality, scalable, and efficient results across the organization. This role guides Managers and teams, shapes long-term direction, and makes critical decisions that define how quality engineering is practiced across Vancity. This is a Full-time, Permanent role based at Vancity Head Office and will report directly to the Director, Quality Engineering.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience in software engineering, quality engineering, or related field.
  • Proven progression through senior technical and delivery leadership roles (QE Lead, QE Manager, Senior QE Manager).
  • Demonstrated experience defining and driving technical strategy across multiple teams or workstreams.
  • Experience leading senior engineers, providing clear direction while developing individuals’ autonomy and initiative.
  • Proven track record influencing organization-wide engineering practices and transformation initiatives.
  • Deep expertise in designing end-to-end quality engineering systems, not just individual frameworks.
  • Proven experience defining automation architecture at scale (API-first and layered testing models, integration of functional and non-functional validation, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of modern testing ecosystems, including API, integration, and UI layers and performance, reliability, and security testing.
  • Experience defining and evolving tooling strategy (buy / build / integrate), with a focus on scalability and extensibility.
  • Strong perspective on emerging approaches such as AI-driven, agentic, and spec-driven automation—and where they provide value to the business at scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and evolve the quality engineering system across multiple workstreams.
  • Experience establishing engineering standards, common frameworks and patterns, and consistent quality practices across teams.
  • Ensure QE practices are scalable and aligned with enterprise delivery models.
  • Experience identifying and resolving systemic gaps in tools, processes, and capabilities.
  • Proven ability to make high-impact strategic decisions (automation architecture direction, tooling investments and standardization, evolution of QE practices, etc.).
  • Ability to balance innovation vs standardization, engineering rigor vs delivery speed, system health and resilience over time vs short-term program needs.
  • Strong understanding of modern engineering ecosystems (cloud-native and microservices architectures, CI/CD platforms, DevOps practices, etc.).
  • Familiarity with platform-level quality engineering capabilities (shared frameworks, services, tooling, etc.).
  • Ability to assess quality effectiveness across systems, identify dependencies across teams, and understand where failures originate and repeat.
  • Experience defining quality KPIs at an organizational level.
  • Ability to translate data into strategic insights and clear business decisions.
  • Focus on quality outcomes and systemic changes, not just local optimizations.
  • Proven ability to influence senior partners in Engineering, Product, and Delivery.
  • Experience acting as a trusted advisor on engineering and quality strategy.
  • Ability to align teams and leaders around common standards and direction.
  • Strong communication skills in driving strategic alignment, novel engineering approaches, and organizational change.
  • Experience leading QE or engineering transformation initiatives (QA → QE).
  • Ability to define, champion and drive adoption of automation-first practices, shift-left quality models, AI-enabled quality engineering capabilities.
  • Proven ability to scale new approaches from pilot to enterprise-wide adoption.

Nice To Haves

  • Systems-oriented – Thinking in terms of platforms, architectures, and long-term sustainability.

  • Forward-looking – Continuously evolving the QE model based on technology and emerging business needs.
  • Accountable – Taking ownership for how quality engineering is defined and scaled across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Converting QE business strategy into a clear, actionable technical strategy.
  • Defining the quality engineering system, including automation architecture (API-first, layered testing), CI/CD-integrated quality models, and NFR engineering approaches (performance, reliability, security).
  • Ensuring consistency and scalability of QE practices across teams.
  • Defining what good looks like for quality engineering across the organization.
  • Establishing and governing engineering standards, frameworks, and best practices.
  • Making critical decisions such as automation architecture model, tooling strategy (buy / build / integrate), and evolution of UI vs API vs agentic testing approaches.
  • Driving adoption of AI-driven and agentic automation techniques.
  • Ensuring alignment across workstreams to avoid fragmentation.
  • Providing engineering direction to QE Managers and teams.
  • Influencing senior stakeholders across Engineering, Product, and Delivery.
  • Guiding teams through complex technical and architectural decisions.
  • Acting as a key advisor to the Director of Quality Engineering on QE transformation.
  • Ensuring the QE system is scalable across multiple workstreams, consistent in standards and practices, and efficient in driving quality outcomes.
  • Identifying and addressing gaps in tools, practices, and capabilities.
  • Driving continuous evolution of the QE discipline.
  • Owning systemic risks such as architectural limitations, scalability constraints, and long-term maintainability of test systems.
  • Ensuring the QE model supports sustainable, high-quality delivery at scale.
