The Senior Manager of Human Resources leads the people function across the company, keeps the fundamentals tight, and helps our leaders build strong teams. This role reports to the Controller and you are our first-ever HR hire, which means you get to build the playbook from the ground up, help shape how leaders lead, and update the systems in place that make hiring, onboarding, pay, benefits, and performance feel clean and consistent. You will spend your time where it matters, solving real people's problems fast, improving the day-to-day experience for the field and office teams, and seeing the impact of your work in weeks, not quarters. This role can work from our Novato or Monterey office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and SHRM certification required
  • 7+ years of progressive HR experience with construction industry is highly desirable
  • 3+ years of leading all HR programs end-to-end, as the primary HR owner
  • Advanced skills in Excel, Payroll, and HR systems (Paychex, Breezy)
  • Payroll oversight experience in partnership with Accounting or Finance
  • Strong judgment and discretion with confidential matters
  • Ability to build simple, scalable processes that leaders and field teams will follow
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including leading manager conversations and managing employee issues
  • Strong project management skills, has lead a system migration for either Payroll, HRMS or ATS
  • Travel 10-20% to job sites around the Bay Area and our other offices in Monterey, Novato, and Burligame

  • Bilingual in Spanish is highly desirable
  • 7+ years of progressive HR experience with construction industry is highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Recruiting Lead full-cycle recruiting for office and field roles Partner with hiring managers on scope, interviews, selection, and close
  • Payroll Lead payroll using Paychex in partnership with the Assistant Controller Ensure accurate payroll, job cost coding, and timekeeping practices
  • Benefits Administration Own day-to-day benefits across medical, dental, vision, life, COBRA, and 401(k) Lead annual renewal and open enrollment with vendors and brokers
  • Compliance and Risk Run required trainings, reporting, and workers’ comp administration
  • Employee Experience Own onboarding, employee records, and core employee relations support Run performance review cycles and manager support rhythms
  • Organizational Development Facilitate team alignment routines and improve manager effectiveness Coach leaders on communication, feedback, and expectations
  • HR Legal Coordination Manage employee issues intake, documentation, and resolution steps Partner with employment counsel on investigations and severance
  • Special Projects and Continuous Improvement Lead HR projects like transitioning payroll/HRIS to a new system, time punching, IIPP rollout, and handbook updates
