About The Position

Be a leader and the true representation of the voice of Snowbird, one of the most iconic brands in the industry. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Marketing, the Senior Communications Manager is a core member of the Marketing division leading Snowbird's external earned storytelling efforts in order to seek positive media coverage and facilitate resort representation with the media, ski industry and general public. This role is a collaborative force on the marketing team and deemed as pivotal to the success of the resort. The ideal candidate excels at writing, strategic communications, crisis management and media relations in a mountain environment and continuous news cycle.

Requirements

  • 7+ years’ experience in public relations, strategic communications, journalism or related field, with a proven track record of success pitching and placing client stories.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field is required.
  • 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Must be able to ski or snowboard at an advanced/expert level.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Valid Driver’s License with clean MVR (driving record).
  • Thorough understanding of AP Style and public relations practices.
  • Proven ability to speak articulately on-camera, in interviews, press conferences and while conducting presentations.
  • Strong leadership skills within a multi-functional team – an ability to understand other job duties, roles, and perspectives and elevate the thinking behind them.
  • Strong written skills with a proven ability to write in AP Style.
  • Creative writing skills are also required.
  • Detailed experience in communication strategy and management – being able to respond to emergencies while thinking big picture about long term positioning.
  • Ability to foster relationships regardless of personality and maintain a high level of professionalism regardless of the situation.
  • Familiarity with local, national and international ski industry and journalists is instrumental.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail is necessary as is being highly organized.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Self-starter who can set goals and priorities and operate in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Creative mindset that improves upon existing processes and introduces new ones.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and other computer functionality required.
  • Experience with project management and media tracking platforms.
  • Must be able to ski or snowboard at an advanced/expert level and can pass a physical capacity screening.
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
  • Must be prepared to stay overnight if necessary on occasional times of road closures.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to bend, kneel, handle, reach, grasp, and perform repetitive motions.

Responsibilities

  • Guide and craft the voice of one of the most iconic brands in the industry, partnering closely with the marketing team to balance messaging.
  • Lead the marketing and communications team to innovate approaches to storytelling and reputation management
  • Develop the Snowbird Communications Strategy, analyzing successful previous approaches and leveraging current trends in communications and public relations
  • Secure local, national and international media coverage through proactive public relations including press releases, story pitching, media hosting, film shoot hosting, relationship building and database management.
  • Manage the press release and media pitch plan based on overall marketing and communications plan, informed by consumer insights and business strategies.
  • Manage the snow reporting function and resort Historian to ensure accurate and consistent messaging.
  • Assist in writing, developing, and sharing key messages on all topics of ski area management.
  • Serve as spokesperson for resort including crisis communications, partnering closely with Resort President on controversial, or sensitive issues.
  • Host and coordinate all aspects of media, influencer, and film FAM trips and shoots.
  • Maintain and build new relationships within local community and the ski industry.
  • Write, edit and proof effective marketing and executive communications as needed for resort initiatives.
  • Actively participate as a key leader in the Marketing Division, contributing ideas and efforts to achieve both marketing and company goals.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of AP Style writing.
  • Develop and track the annual Communications budget.
  • Manage and coordinate commercial photoshoots in partnership with group sales and conference services.
  • Partner with content team to provide live snow reporting details and assets.
  • Attend in- and out-of-state media functions.
  • Maintain on-call availability, including weekends and holidays
  • Other duties as assigned.
