About The Position

The Senior Manager, Credit Risk provides leadership, oversight, and supports the strategic direction for Sunrise Credit Union’s credit risk management and adjudication functions. Reporting to the Director, Risk, this role is responsible for maintaining credit portfolio quality, ensuring consistent application of credit policies, and supporting sustainable growth across all lending portfolios — retail, commercial, and agriculture. The Senior Manager oversees the Senior Credit Adjudicator (who manages the adjudication team) the Credit Risk Specialist, and the Loan Administrative Clerk, ensuring alignment between credit decision-making, risk monitoring, and portfolio governance. The role acts as a key link between lending operations and risk oversight, supporting the organization’s credit strategy, policy evolution, and regulatory compliance with credit requirements.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree in Finance, Business Administration, Commerce, or Economics.
  • Minimum 8–10 years of credit and risk management experience, including 3–5 years in leadership.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong understanding of credit risk principles, portfolio management, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proven ability to assess complex commercial and agriculture lending transactions.
  • Solid experience with credit risk reporting, policy development, and audit compliance.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and credit assessment skills.
  • Excellent leadership, coaching, and team development abilities.
  • Sound judgment in balancing business growth and risk mitigation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the overall credit risk management framework, ensuring sound credit judgment and alignment with Sunrise’s risk appetite and policies.
  • Oversee adjudication and portfolio monitoring activities, ensuring credit quality across all product lines.
  • Ensure lending and adjudication teams adhere to policy limits, approval authorities, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Provide guidance and leadership on complex or high-value credit requests, ensuring prudent decisions.
  • Review and approve credits within delegated authority; make recommendations for those exceeding limits.
  • Oversee ongoing portfolio analysis to identify emerging risks, trends, and concentrations.
  • Collaborate with the Corporate Credit Risk team to develop and maintain credit risk metrics, dashboards, and reports.
  • Monitor delinquency, loss rates, and credit concentrations to ensure alignment with enterprise risk tolerance.
  • Review early warning indicators and ensure corrective actions are implemented for high-risk segments.
  • Participate in conducting stress testing and scenario analysis to assess risk impacts on the loan portfolio and capital.
  • Participate in the review, development, and enhancement of credit policies, adjudication standards, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, DGCM guidelines, and internal control frameworks.
  • Participate in audit reviews and support remediation activities as required.
  • Maintain documentation and governance controls to ensure audit readiness and transparency.
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership to the Senior Credit Adjudicator and adjudication team.
  • Oversee credit decision-making for complex commercial, agriculture, and retail lending applications.
  • Support consistent and fair credit adjudication practices across portfolios and regions in alignment with Sunrise’s risk appetite.
  • Mentor adjudicators and lenders to strengthen credit structuring and risk evaluation capabilities.
  • Monitor adjudication turnaround times, accuracy, and consistency with policy standards.
  • Partner with the Director, Risk and CFRO to align credit risk management with enterprise objectives.
  • Collaborate with Lending, Finance, and Operations teams to ensure a unified approach to credit governance.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to lending staff on credit risk management and best practices.
  • Represent the Corporate Credit Risk function in enterprise projects, committees, and risk forums.
  • Lead, coach, and develop direct reports to ensure strong technical performance and engagement.
  • Build team capacity through coaching, mentoring, and professional development.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and service excellence.
  • Foster collaboration and communication between credit risk and branch lending teams.
  • Prepare regular reports and insights for the Director, Risk, CFRO, and Executive Leadership Team.
  • Support the development of Board and committee reports related to credit risk and portfolio performance.
  • Communicate complex risk information clearly and effectively to non-technical audiences.
  • Participate in enterprise initiatives or projects related to credit risk, lending transformation, or loan system enhancements.
  • Support strategic and annual planning for the risk function.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director, Risk.
