About The Position

The American Academy of Dermatology is seeking a Senior Manager, Clinical Guidelines located in our Rosemont, IL. office responsible for leading the development of clinical practice guidelines. Review literature, identify and analyze scientific articles for the development of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines working in collaboration with physicians. Serve as the scientific and methodological consultant to volunteer guideline and research agenda physician work groups, and Academy staff as needed. Manage project timelines and budget. Oversee the manuscript production and submission. Contribute strategic input for the development and refinement of guideline processes. Provide methodological and process mentorship to Team members. Requirements

  • Advanced degree in biological sciences or related field required
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in clinical research.
  • Minimum 5 years evaluating scientific journal articles with a strong familiarity with medical writing and terminology. Background in reviewing scientific/clinical research literature in peer-reviewed journals
  • Demonstrated expertise in GRADE methodology, serving as the primary methodological resource for staff and volunteer physicians. Responsible for applying GRADE to guideline development, mentoring direct reports, and providing guidance as the GRADE subject matter expert both internally and externally.
  • Experience using internet searches with Medline or PubMed with an analytical approach to technical or scientific materials
  • Knowledge of and experience with evidence-based guidelines
  • Qualitative and quantitative research experience
  • Project Management - Ability to coordinate clinical guideline development and research products across varying, often multi-year timelines.
  • Research Skills - Strong ability to search published literature. Understanding of scientific study and clinical trial structure and design. Skill in assessing study strengths and limitations.
  • Communication - Effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication with colleagues and volunteer physicians.
  • Organizational Skills - Strong organizational, time management, and planning abilities
  • Ability to execute projects independently.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary staff liaison to the expert physician work groups, Committees, and/or taskforces developing Clinical Practice Guidelines and supporting the Academy’s research agenda as assigned. Provide scientific, methodological, and administrative support for work group activities.
  • Develop and manage project timelines, budgets and deliverables, including coordination with collaborating organizations and oversight of consultant writers and vendors.
  • Work collaboratively with guideline workgroup chairs, contractors and colleagues to determine search strategies, identify, review and analyze scientific articles for assigned guideline topic(s). Work with the Medical Librarian to coordinate the comprehensive search/retrieval of literature.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate articles for inclusion in the guideline. Develop tables that summarize the data from selected articles for the use of physicians work groups to formulate recommendations for the guideline.
  • Oversee the submission of guideline manuscripts for publication, including overseeing medical writers, contractors and research staff.
  • Communicate key findings in written and/or verbal presentations. Synthesize and present information that is engaging and sensitive to audience.
  • Contribute to the completion of intradepartmental requests for scientific/research support as needed.
  • Assist the Associate Director and Director with recommending and determining appropriate strategic goals that relate to the department and the overall Academy mission. Contribute to the development and implementation of programs to fulfill these goals as appropriate.
  • Develop on-boarding and training resources for team members. Serve as a mentor to new and developing guideline managers and research analysts.
  • Originate and contribute to the analysis, refinement, and implementation of guideline development best practices, policies, and procedures.
