The City of San José’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) is looking for people who want to make San José a better place to live and visit. Requirements

  • Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate)
  • Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, parks, street landscaping, or public facilities, including at least one (1) year experience providing lead direction to a crew engaged in semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repair of parks, facilities and infrastructure; groundskeeping; or landscaping.
  • As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies, and federal and state rules and regulations.
  • Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts clearly, orally and in writing; demonstrates effective use of listening skills and displays openness to other people's ideas and thoughts.
  • Experienced with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel.
  • Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently using a professional demeanor.

Responsibilities

  • Perform under direction, plan, schedule, assign, and review the work of large crews engaged in semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of parks, landscaping, and public facilities.
  • Direct and participate in training and developing employee skills and assist in evaluating assigned crews.
  • Direct and participate in inventory and control of supplies, spare parts, and equipment for use in work areas.
  • Plan, schedule, organize, and assign work based on work requests and the results of facility or field inspections, and requisition materials for work completion.
  • Create, distribute, assign, and assure completion of work orders and time on jobs; track daily activities and enter data into an automated system.
  • Supervise, provide lead direction, and participate in the accomplishment of projects in parks and recreation areas such as the construction of chain link fencing, fire breaks, steps and footbridges, landscaping, and seeding and planting areas; participate in the repair, maintenance, and reconstruction of parks, playgrounds, sports fields, and trails.
  • Supervise and provide lead direction to staff in the operation and utilization of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in the performance of assigned work, including the use of safety devices and safe working practices.
  • Complete work order forms, daily activity logs, timecards, requisitions, vandalism reports, water use records, purchase orders, and supply records; conduct and document crash, injury, and near-miss investigations.
  • Direct and participate in the operation and maintenance of irrigation systems on ground and turf areas, and park areas.
  • Conduct safety meetings; perform periodic safety inspections on vehicles and crews.
  • Implement and maintain preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Provide bids for repairs, renovations, and new installations of parks, sports fields, community centers and library landscapes.
  • May supervise and provide lead direction in weed abatement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • May be required to work alternate shifts, including weekends, evenings, holidays, overtime, and on call.
