About The Position

The City of Gilroy is currently recruiting for a full-time Senior Maintenance Worker assigned to the Water Section within the Utilities Department, Operations Division. Our Water Section personnel are responsible for inspecting, maintaining, constructing, repairing, and operating the City's water distribution system. Under the direction of the Water Superintendent, this position performs and leads maintenance work, supervises field crews, and serves in the supervisor's absence as assigned. This position offers an excellent pathway for career advancement. Employees gain hands-on leadership experience, strengthen advanced technical skills in water distribution system operations, receive support in earning State of California certifications, and gain exposure to budgeting, project coordination, and planning—preparing them for future supervisory and management opportunities within the Utilities Department.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school OR a G.E.D. and four (4) years experience in construction and maintenance of water systems.
  • Possess a Grade II Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by the State of California at time of application.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and a safe driving record.
  • Must participate in the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing program, which includes submission to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Must pass a post-offer medical examination, which includes a drug test.
  • Pass a Department of Justice criminal record check for employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from an accredited institution with an Associates Degree in a related field is desired.
  • A Class A driver's license at the time of hire is strongly preferred.
  • May be required to obtain a Backflow Prevention Assembly General Tester Certificate within twelve (12) months of date of hire or promotion.
  • May be required to obtain a Cross Connection Control Program Specialist Certificate within twelve (12) months of date of hire or promotion.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Class A California Driver License with pertinent endorsements within the probationary period.
  • Prefer non-tobacco user.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, maintains, constructs, repairs, and operates the City's water distribution system.
  • Performs and leads maintenance work.
  • Supervises field crews.
  • Serves in the supervisor's absence as assigned.
  • Plans, schedules, coordinates, and leads daily field operations.
  • Actively engages in technical work.
  • Promotes a culture of safety, professionalism, accountability, and exceptional customer service.
  • Utilizes computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and other work management software to effectively manage work orders, assets, and maintenance activities.
  • Communicates clearly through technical reports, work documentation, and effective collaboration with staff, contractors, and the public.
  • Exercises sound judgment, strong organizational skills, and effective time management to prioritize competing assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Fosters positive working relationships by collaborating with others, leading by example, and maintaining a positive, team-oriented attitude.
  • Maintains a clean driving record and demonstrates a commitment to safe driving.
