Senior Maintenance Mechanic/Plumber

About The Position

This employee performs skilled trades work involving the maintenance of pipefitting equipment, systems, and fixtures in municipal facilities. Assignments are received from and reviewed by a higher-level employee, and work is also reviewed by a licensed plumbing inspector. The employee serves as a lead worker on many group projects and must respond to emergency situations at irregular hours as needed. Related work is performed as required. City residency is required within one year of hire.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED, or qualifying work experience requiring daily reading, writing, and arithmetic computations may substitute for education on a year-for-year, case-by-case basis.
Three years of experience independently performing pipefitting activities.
Active New York State Class D (former Class 5) driver's license at appointment; the license must be maintained throughout employment.
City residency is required within one year of hire.

Responsibilities

Evaluate work orders and project requests to determine the procedures and resources needed to complete assigned tasks.
Install, maintain, repair, and rebuild a wide variety of pipefitting equipment, systems, and fixtures.
Perform complex steam-fitting and pipe-fitting work, including cutting, fitting, and soldering copper, cast iron, steel, and PVC pipe.
Fabricate ferrous, non-ferrous, and non-metallic fittings, piping, and components into systems.
Plan, lay out, and organize work assignments for plumbing crews.
Determine necessary supplies and materials and order them.
Ensure the quality of supplies and materials meets acceptable standards for completing tasks.
Determine required technical support and request assistance from other departments and vendors.
Instruct maintenance crews in the proper use of new equipment and tools and in new procedures and methods.
Respond to emergency situations at irregular hours as needed.
