About The Position
Yelp is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer for its Content and Contributor Intelligence team. The role focuses on building connections across millions of users and business listings by applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to large, diverse datasets. The engineer will work with neural networks, large language models, text, image, and video embeddings, as well as traditional approaches such as XGBoost and linear models. The position covers the end-to-end machine learning lifecycle: transforming raw data into useful signals, training models, deploying them to production, and contributing to the platforms that support those models. Work includes text and visual understanding, fine-tuning transformer models to derive embeddings for multiple input types, and supporting offline batch data products and online real-time services. The role also includes mentoring engineers and promoting strong machine learning development and operations practices. The opportunity can be hybrid anywhere in Canada; applicants are welcome from throughout the country. Requirements
- Experience developing and productionizing machine learning models, particularly neural networks, computer vision, and large language models, including their supporting data pipelines.
- Experience with machine learning packages such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Spark MLlib, XGBoost, and scikit-learn.
- Strong coding skills in Python or an equivalent language such as Java or C++.
- Solid understanding of engineering and infrastructure best practices.
- Curiosity to uncover promising solutions to new problems and persistence to carry ideas through to completion.
Nice To Haves
- Experience working with large language models, using LLM APIs such as OpenAI or Bedrock, prompt engineering, and evaluation.
Responsibilities
- Conduct end-to-end analyses, from wrangling data with SQL or Python and statistical modeling to developing hypotheses and presenting business ideas.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering learning and technical excellence.
- Work with large and complex textual and visual datasets.
- Support the development and deployment of machine-learned models for offline, batch-based data products and online, real-time services.
- Work on text and visual understanding and fine-tune transformer models to derive embeddings for multiple input types.
- Productionize and automate model pipelines within Python services.
- Advocate for and drive adoption of best practices in machine learning development and operations, and mentor newer engineers in those practices.
- Build machine learning systems end-to-end, including training and production deployment, and contribute to the platforms those models rely on.
