About The Position

MCG Architecture is seeking a highly experienced Senior Job Captain – Level 3 to join its Irvine, California office. The Senior Job Captain will serve as the technical and production leader for assigned architectural projects. Working closely with Project Directors and Project Managers, this person will organize construction-document production, coordinate consultants, manage plan-check responses, maintain drawing quality, and help carry projects from design development through permitting and construction administration. This position is particularly important to MCG’s schedule-driven retail, restaurant, commercial, and national-account work, where accuracy, coordination, permitting knowledge, and responsiveness directly affect construction and opening dates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and substantial architectural production experience.
  • Approximately 7–12+ years of architectural experience.
  • Significant experience producing commercial construction documents.
  • Retail, restaurant, grocery, mixed-use, tenant-improvement, or national-rollout experience is strongly preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit.
  • Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and Bluebeam.
  • Experience organizing models, families, worksharing, consultant links, details, schedules, and construction-document sheets.
  • Demonstrated understanding of building codes, accessibility, detailing, building systems, and consultant coordination.
  • Experience responding to plan-check comments and supporting projects through permit approval.
  • Construction-administration experience, including RFIs and submittals.
  • Ability to independently organize several projects or project phases in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • California architectural licensure is preferred but not required.
  • Active progress toward architectural licensure is encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation of coordinated Revit construction documents.
  • Carry projects from design development through permit, bidding, and issue-for-construction documentation.
  • Establish project drawing organization, sheet lists, model standards, details, schedules, and production milestones.
  • Coordinate civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, landscape, kitchen, signage, accessibility, and specialty consultants.
  • Identify and resolve consultant conflicts before drawing packages are issued.
  • Research and apply applicable building codes, zoning requirements, accessibility standards, and landlord criteria.
  • Apply the California Building Code, IBC, ADA requirements, California accessibility standards, Title 24, and local amendments.
  • Prepare and coordinate planning, building, fire, health, and other agency submissions.
  • Respond to plan-check comments and support projects through permit approval.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, substitutions, and field conditions.
  • Assist with construction-administration activities and site observations.
  • Track project scope, schedule, hours, deliverables, and technical risks.
  • Notify project leadership of issues that could affect permit dates, construction schedules, or client opening dates.
  • Conduct technical and quality-control reviews of architectural documentation.
  • Mentor Job Captains, Project Coordinators, and production staff.
  • Help improve Revit workflows, details, documentation standards, and quality-control procedures.
