About The Position

The Senior Java API Lead provides technical and consultative support on complex technical matters. The role analyzes, designs, and develops systems based on user specifications and provides technical assistance in resolving hardware and software problems. It uses in-depth knowledge of technical tools for systems development and support, and maintains awareness of technical industry trends as they apply to Huntington. The position may help identify training needs or train less experienced staff, may lead specific projects, and performs other assigned duties.

The role requires hands-on development with Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices; strong SQL skills; and experience with API-enabled applications, event-driven architectures, integrations, and production support. Preferred experience includes Google Cloud Platform, API and CI/CD tools, API gateways, and banking industry collaboration.

The position is office-based. Certain positions outside the branch network may be eligible for a flexible arrangement combining in-office and work-from-home time; the hiring team will provide specific arrangements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on development experience with Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices.
• Strong SQL skills, including complex queries, joins, stored procedures, and database troubleshooting.
• Experience building API-enabled applications and event-driven architectures, including integrations with internal and third-party systems.
• Experience with production support, code reviews, troubleshooting, and Agile development.
• Experience guiding developers on Java/API best practices.

Nice To Haves

• Fluency in Java 8 or above and strong experience developing large-scale backend applications using Spring Framework and Spring Boot.
• Strong experience designing, developing, and integrating REST APIs, microservices, and event-driven applications.
• Strong SQL and relational database experience, including schema design, complex query development, stored procedures, and performance optimization.
• Hands-on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) experience; described as highly preferred and a major plus.
• Experience with Swagger/OpenAPI, Maven, Git/GitHub, Jenkins, Postman/Newman, and CI/CD practices.
• Experience with Apigee or similar API gateway platforms.
• Strong troubleshooting skills across application, API, database, security, and performance issues.
• Banking industry experience and ability to work effectively across IT teams, vendors, business partners, and application support teams.
