About The Position

The Ministry of Education and Childcare supports students, parents, teachers and administrators from Early Childhood Service (ECS) through Grade 12. The Alberta Teaching Profession Commission (ATPC) oversees a new model for teacher and teacher leader disciplinary matters, which came into force on January 1, 2023. The ATPC protects students and enhances accountability and transparency for disciplinary matters as a regulated profession. The Senior Investigator brings advanced investigative expertise and deep knowledge of legislation related to teacher conduct and competence. Working independently with minimal supervision, the role involves managing a high volume of complex investigations and ensuring fair, timely, and thorough investigations are completed.

Requirements

  • University degree in a related field (e.g., Education, Social Sciences, Public Administration, Legal Studies) or equivalent experience (1 year of experience = 1 year of education).
  • Minimum of four years in investigations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Superior report writing and documentation skills.
  • Exceptional interviewing and effective listening abilities.
  • Strong conflict management and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proficient verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • High adaptability to change and sound judgment.
  • Ability to manage complex situations under strict timelines.
  • High level of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Capacity to mentor and support a team of investigators.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior work within Alberta’s education system.
  • Knowledge of provincial legislation related to unprofessional conduct and professional competence.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations independently, including interviews, evidence collection, and report writing.
  • Apply knowledge of the Education Act, Code of Professional Conduct, and Quality Standards.
  • Prioritize and manage a high caseload of complex and/or sensitive investigations.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, discretion, and a high degree of professionalism.
  • Lead team investigations when required and testify at hearings.
  • Mentor investigators, assist with training, and contribute to process development.
  • Liaise with stakeholders such as Alberta Education, Alberta Justice, law enforcement, schools, and the public.
  • Provide reports, briefings, and recommendations to the Manager of Investigations.
  • Guide and support the investigation team.
  • Maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders and respond to inquiries.
  • Handle sensitive complaints involving multiple perspectives and high emotion with professionalism and care.
