About The Position
Advanced Education Special Investigations (AESI) is responsible for investigation of fraud related to two Advanced Education programs, Alberta Student Aid and Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training. AESI investigates complaints under delegated provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada, and statutes administered by Advanced Education and has province wide jurisdiction. Your work will have a direct impact on maintaining the integrity of Alberta's advanced education system and ensuring public resources are protected through fair, thorough, and professional investigations.
Requirements
- University degree in Law, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Social Justice, Restorative Justice, or a related field.
- Minimum four (4) years of experience conducting investigations within a criminal, regulatory, compliance, or enforcement environment.
- Eligibility for appointment as an Alberta Peace Officer Act for the purpose of enforcing the provincial statues.
- A valid driver's license is required.
Nice To Haves
- Experience conducting complex investigations and applying advanced investigative techniques.
- Experience in drafting and swearing ITOs, interviewing witnesses, suspects and managing evidence.
- Courtroom and hearing experience, including providing testimony and serving as a Crown witness.
- Leadership, mentorship, or supervisory experience in a law enforcement or investigative environment.
- Knowledge of Advanced Education legislation and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience collaborating with Crown prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, and external partners.
- Knowledge of the Criminal Code, Alberta legislation, and related investigative procedures.
- Proficiency with investigative databases and Microsoft Office applications.
Responsibilities
- Lead complex criminal and investigations related to fraud and identity theft.
- Collect, analyze, and present evidence to support enforcement and prosecution activities.
- Prepare investigative reports, court documents, and briefing materials to the criminal court standard.
- Provide mentorship and technical expertise to investigators and stakeholders.
- Identify risks and contribute to policy and program improvements.
- Support leadership through strategic advice, reporting, and operational oversight.
