About The Position

The District Attorney's office is seeking an individual to fill the role of Investigator Senior to assist in achieving the department's mission to pursue justice through the fair and ethical prosecutions of criminal offenders, to seek justice for victims of crime, to create a safer community through positive partnerships with law enforcement and other community members, and to earn and hold the trust and respect of the citizens that we are privileged and honored to serve. Primary Objectives Performs advanced investigative and case support functions to assist prosecutors in the preparation and prosecution of criminal cases, including locating and interviewing victims and witnesses, monitoring jail calls, and documenting investigative activities within the case management system. Oversees administration of the Special Victims Response Team (SVRT) grant and ensures compliance with grant requirements. Collaborates with prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, and community partners to support effective case management and victim services ; performs related tasks as apparent or assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Supervision Exercised Supervision is exercised over assigned department personnel.

Requirements

  • Position requires a High School diploma or GED and ten (10) years of experience with performing criminal/civil investigations or in law enforcement duties OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Nevada Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Category I Certificate, or able to meet the Nevada POST Certification requirements set forth in NAC 289.200 within 90 days of date of employment

Responsibilities

  • Performs investigations related to civil and criminal matters involving Douglas County; performs follow-up and pre-trial criminal investigations related to cases submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution; performs pre-trial services and witness preparation.
  • Performs management and supervisory duties within the District Attorney’s Office and directly supervises all sworn members, employees, and volunteers assigned to the Investigations Division; participates in the interview and hiring process, as well as the training of new employees; develops staff skills; listens and responds to employee problems, concerns, and complaints and suggests solutions that may rectify the situation; prepares performance evaluations, discusses performance with assigned staff, and counsels employees concerning performance improvements.
  • Develops and reviews goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for the Investigations Division; ensures compliance with established policies, procedures, and regulations; develops and administers division budget and authorizes expenditures.
  • Prepares accurate, thorough, and timely investigative reports; records progress of investigations and maintains informational files on investigations being performed.
  • Obtains warrants, subpoenas and other legal process from the appropriate authority and executes same; apprehends and arrests law violators.
  • Coordinates investigations with and acts as a liaison to representatives of federal, state, county and local law enforcement agencies and District Attorney staff to stay informed, avoid duplication and facilitate successful case preparation and presentation.
  • Obtains information through interviewing, questioning, and observation, including surveillance; reacts quickly and correctly in emergencies; assembles information, evaluates and presents supported conclusions; establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Directs the preparation of and prepares evidence and investigative reports for submission in court; prepares visual aids, drawing large scale diagrams and/or developing models of crime scenes.
  • Performs internal and/or disciplinary investigations for Douglas County Human Resources and other Douglas County Departments.
  • Reviews police reports, investigative reports, medical records, financial records, criminal histories, court documents, and other similar information related to investigations being performed.
  • Conducts interviews with victims, witnesses, and suspects of crime; conducts interviews with Douglas County employees related to employment and/or disciplinary issues; conducts interviews as directed regarding matters of interest to the District Attorney’s Office.
  • Effectively communicates with individuals in both formal and information settings; testifies under oath in court or before an administrative agency regarding investigative findings, coordinates and assists victims and witnesses during legal proceedings.
  • Regularly updates immediate supervisor and prosecutors as to progress of investigations; seeks instruction and/or direction from co-workers and supervision regarding investigations when necessary.
  • Manages application and administration for grants to include financial management, reporting/compliance and performance management.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its clients by developing and coordinating work teams and by reviewing, recommending and implementing improved policies and procedures.
  • Uses County vehicle to perform various tasks related to job duties.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
  • Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
