Senior Industrial Designer - TeraWave

Blue Origin•Cupertino, WA
•$145,188 - $203,263

About The Position

Blue Origin is seeking an experienced Industrial Designer to lead the aesthetic and cosmetic design of the TeraWave User Terminal, a consumer-facing hardware product for its satellite communications network. The role owns the terminal’s industrial design, user-facing appearance, and overall form factor, collaborating with mechanical, electrical, RF, and product teams to deliver a manufacturable, market-ready design. The network is designed to provide symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps and serve enterprise, data center, and government users worldwide. The designer will develop concepts and design specifications, including CAD surface models, and validate designs through prototypes and design testing. The role also works with suppliers on finishes, tooling feasibility, and prototype builds, and presents design concepts and rationale to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of industrial design experience with consumer hardware products.
  • Experience taking a product from concept through production across the full product lifecycle.
  • Strong proficiency with 3D CAD and surfacing tools, such as Autodesk Alias, Fusion 360, Rhino, or SolidWorks.
  • Strong digital and hand sketching and rendering skills for communicating design concepts.
  • Deep understanding of manufacturing processes, including injection molding, CNC machining, and sheet metal, and their implications for design.
  • Knowledge of materials and finishes suited to consumer electronics and outdoor-rated hardware.
  • Familiarity with DFM/DFA principles and ability to collaborate effectively with mechanical engineering teams.
  • Understanding of thermal, RF, and structural constraints as they relate to industrial design, with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineering.
  • Portfolio showcasing shipped consumer hardware products; required for application.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, U.S. permanent residents, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as refugees or granted asylum.
  • Successful completion of Blue Origin’s standard background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing outdoor or semi-outdoor consumer hardware, such as weatherproof enclosures, antennas, or mounting systems.
  • Experience in telecommunications, networking equipment, consumer electronics, or similar industries.
  • Experience designing products with external antennas or RF-sensitive enclosures.
  • Experience with ruggedized or outdoor consumer products, including IP-rated enclosures.

Responsibilities

  • Lead industrial design of the User Terminal, including form factor, surface design, materials, finishes, and color, texture, and finish (CMF) strategy.
  • Develop design concepts, sketches, renderings, and 3D models to communicate design intent to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers to ensure design feasibility, manufacturability, and structural integrity while preserving design intent.
  • Partner with electrical and RF engineers to ensure industrial design supports antenna performance, thermal management, and other technical requirements.
  • Create and maintain design specifications and CAD surface models for downstream engineering use.
  • Design user-facing elements, including enclosures, mounting mechanisms, cable management, ports, indicator lights, and branding elements.
  • Build and evaluate physical prototypes and mockups to validate ergonomics, aesthetics, and usability.
  • Work with vendors and suppliers on finish samples, tooling feasibility, and prototype builds.
  • Ensure the design aligns with brand identity and the product design language across the broader product lineup.
  • Support design validation testing, including fit and finish, drop-test appearance, and cosmetic-surface weatherability.
  • Present design concepts and rationale to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders for alignment and sign-off.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
  • Education Support Program.
  • Stock options for regular employees working at least 20 hours per week.
  • Up to four weeks of paid time off per year based on weekly scheduled hours.
  • Up to 14 company-paid holidays.
  • Employees may be eligible for benefits and bonuses depending on role type, job level, individual contributions, and other factors; bonuses and eligibility are not guaranteed.
