About The Position

Capital Power is seeking an experienced and results-driven Senior Industrial Control Systems Engineer to join their Engineering team. This role supports Industrial Control Systems (ICS), SCADA, and Operational Technology (OT) across their power generation fleet, with a primary focus on Ontario operations. The successful candidate will provide day-to-day engineering and technical support, contribute to system design and lifecycle management, and help ensure the safe and reliable operation of control and instrumentation systems within their facilities. The role includes hands-on engineering and collaboration with operations and maintenance teams.

Requirements

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in practicing engineering.
  • Engineering experience in an operating plant setting.
  • Advanced knowledge of Instrumentation and Control Systems (I&C) best practices in an operating plant environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with control systems including PLC, DCS, SCADA, and RTU, encompassing programming, troubleshooting, system upgrades, lifecycle management, and multi‑vendor integration.
  • Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols such as MODBUS, ICCP, DNP3, and OPC.
  • Solid working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and best practices related to Instrumentation and Controls design.
  • Experience with operational data historians, SQL, and the application of data analytics to support operations and reliability.
  • Experience with Windows server and workstation administration, domain administration, and virtualization in an OT environment.
  • Experience with, or familiarity using, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) such as Maximo.
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within cross‑functional teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer, Process Control or Electrical Engineering preferred. Other educational backgrounds considered based on experience.
  • Knowledge of network administration, configuration, and troubleshooting within industrial and OT networks is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with ICS cybersecurity principles, frameworks, and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Delivery of day-to-day engineering and technical support of industrial control systems and OT architecture for the Capital Power fleet.
  • Take ownership and accountability for assigned work, deliverables, and outcomes.
  • Apply sound engineering principles to develop and implement technical solutions for OT and ICS activities, including control logic modifications, alarm setpoint reviews, firmware updates, network changes, and instrumentation upgrades.
  • Develop and implement solutions to address complex and diverse Instrumentation and Control Systems challenges across multiple generating facilities.
  • Support and help facilitate the ICS cybersecurity maintenance program for onsite systems, including patching, incident response, backup and recovery, network security, and system monitoring.
  • Develop predictive tools, enhance maintenance practices, review predictive and preventative maintenance outputs, and implement design changes to improve system reliability and performance.
  • Provide technical direction and oversight to contract and maintenance personnel to ensure the successful execution of Instrumentation and Control Systems work.
  • Provide support and guidance on ICS/SCADA/OT Sustaining Capital and O&M projects.
  • Evaluate the technical and economic benefits of proposed solutions and provide recommendations for alternative approaches where appropriate.
  • Maintain and optimize operational data historian systems to support plant operations, analytics, and reporting.
  • Manage and maintain licensing and support agreements for onsite control and automation systems.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) compliance program.
  • Review, apply, and develop internal engineering standards, including Management of Change (MOC) processes.
  • Collaborate effectively across engineering, operations, maintenance, corporate teams, OEMs and vendors to build strong working relationships.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to junior engineers, Engineers-in-Training (EITs), and students.
  • Actively pursue continuous improvement of technical, leadership, and management skills through formal and informal learning opportunities.
