About The Position

The Hisotechnologist, Sr. processes surgical specimens for pathologic diagnosis, including tissue fixation, processing, microtomy and staining slides for microscopic examination by the Pathologist. Performs related special staining techniques, which may include immunohistochemical, immunofluorescent and enzyme histochemical stains. Documents all quality control and preventive maintenance procedures performed.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved school of Histotechnology.
  • Certified by a professional laboratory certifying agency, i.e. (ASCP) American Society of Clinical Pathologists or eligible
  • Three (3) years of laboratory experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs troubleshooting of processing and staining processes and instruments, places engineering and biomed service requests as needed.
  • Prepares stock and working reagents and maintains an adequate supply.
  • Performs specimen receiving and processing and answers the telephone and greets guests to the department. Regularly reports all abnormal findings to a senior technologist, the assistant manager and/or Pathologist and documents discrepancies and their resolutions.
  • Assumes one or more of the following responsibilities: key operator duties, projects, teaching, tech in charge and evaluation of new technology.
  • Supervises employees in daily activities associated with histology laboratory functions.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Baptist Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Baptist Health policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program including performance and evaluation of key quality indicators. Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agencies requirements. Practices infection control and safety policies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.
  • Cross trained to perform all benches in histology and may be required to train in slide distribution electron microscopy and diener.
