This position is responsible for leading, overseeing, or performing highway design engineering, applying advanced knowledge of general engineering principles and practices. The role requires interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating assignments with limited supervision, and acting as a technical advisor and mentor to less experienced engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design for multiple concurrent projects and tasks for your discipline.
  • Assist Project Manager with consultative services to the client by understanding client requirements, recommendations, and solutions to enhance client experience.
  • Attend client or stakeholder meetings or interviews in support of the project manager.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of engineering work within a part of a major project or a total project of moderate scope.
  • Design transportation improvements for roadways, interchanges, intersection improvements, sidewalks, and trail projects using advanced discipline knowledge, client specifications, and guidelines with design software and drawing tools.
  • Develop solutions to complex problems and share best practices/lessons learned broadly (company, client, or industry).
  • Define parameters, review, and present alternative studies based on experience and advanced engineering knowledge.
  • Prepare or lead the preparation of highway engineering documents, technical reports, memos, etc.
  • Evaluate and collaborate on the discipline’s workflow and standard operating procedures to increase efficiency.
  • Perform and check design computations.
  • Conduct quality reviews of project design in accordance with the Project Management Plan.
  • Provide cross-disciplinary and constructability reviews on complex projects.
  • Provide input to the project manager and section head regarding scope development, work hours for tasks, and project schedule creation for the discipline.
  • Manage and lead work to meet provided project schedules and budgets relevant to the discipline.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with team members and other disciplines to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality.
  • Delegate project work to design engineers, coordinate project requirements, and perform quality reviews.
  • Mentor and coach on technical knowledge to advance skill development and advise on project design.
  • Provide technical oversight and guidance/support to Design Engineers within the department.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Actively participate and contribute (presenting, publishing papers, etc.) in industry organizations, publications, and/or conversations.
