About The Position

Ethos is expanding its Energy Infrastructure capability and is seeking a Senior High Voltage Engineer specialising in HV Electrical Engineering to support the development and delivery of HV and MV infrastructure projects across Ireland, the UK and Europe. The role will focus on the design and delivery of energy centres, substations, landing stations, interconnectors and associated energy infrastructure projects, while supporting the growth of an in-house HV engineering team within Ethos. This is a senior technical role requiring a strong background in HV substation design, client and utility interface management, and multidisciplinary project delivery. The successful candidate will work closely with internal teams, external consultants, utilities, OEMs and clients to deliver high-quality HV infrastructure solutions. The role combines technical leadership, project delivery, client engagement, team development, and coordination of internal and subcontracted design resources. This position is primarily office-based with regular client meetings, workshops and site visits across Ireland, the UK and Europe.

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Typically 8–15+ years’ experience in HV/MV electrical engineering.
  • Demonstrable experience delivering HV substation projects up to 400kV, AIS and GIS substations, grid connection infrastructure, and HV cable and auxiliary systems.
  • Strong understanding of primary and secondary substation systems, grid forming and Grid Following interfacing, protection and control systems, earthing and lightning protection, and utility and TSO/DSO interface requirements.
  • Experience working within consultancy environments, utility / TSO projects, or energy infrastructure or industrial power sectors.
  • Experience managing or coordinating engineering teams and external consultants is highly desirable.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) is desirable but not essential.
  • Strong knowledge of IEC, BS, EN and IS standards.
  • Strong knowledge of utility and grid connection requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of HV design principles and substation engineering practices.
  • Familiarity with tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP, PowerFactory.
  • Familiarity with PSCAD (desirable).
  • Strong technical reporting, specification writing and client communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience managing or coordinating engineering teams and external consultants is highly desirable.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) is desirable but not essential.
  • Familiarity with PSCAD.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of HV and MV infrastructure projects, including AIS and GIS substations, grid connection infrastructure, landing stations and interconnectors, and HV auxiliary systems and associated infrastructure.
  • Develop and review single line diagrams (SLDs), substation layouts, protection and control philosophies, HV cable systems, earthing and lightning protection systems, secondary systems and auxiliary power systems.
  • Coordinate and manage multidisciplinary design teams, including internal engineering resources, external consultants and specialist subcontractors, OEMs and utility stakeholders.
  • Interface directly with clients, TSOs / DSOs / utilities, contractors, and regulatory and approval bodies.
  • Support the development of Ethos’ HV engineering capability, including technical standards and procedures, recruitment and mentoring, and development of internal delivery capability.
  • Review technical studies and support design decision-making, including load flow studies, short circuit studies, protection coordination, harmonics and power quality studies, and earthing studies.
  • Support tendering, technical bid reviews and project planning activities.
  • Attend site visits, inspections and commissioning activities as required.
