Senior Electrical Engineer, High Voltage

IPX Power USA, LLCBeaverton, OR

About The Position

The Electrical Engineer will lead the end-to-end technical execution of high-voltage (HV) switchyards, substations, and medium-voltage (MV) systems across utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects. This role serves as the central hub for critical engineering decisions, ensuring that switchyards are engineered, designed, and constructed strictly up to utility standards for seamless interconnection and handover. Additionally, you will own critical technical engineering decisions spanning utility interconnection of generation facilities, transmission design optimization, and MV collection system performance —from early-stage development through financing, construction, commissioning, and into operations. The role requires a strong balance of technical depth in HV switchyard/substation design and power system studies, combined with elite technical workstream management skills. You will direct EPCs, coordinate with utilities and equipment vendors, and align internal cross-functional teams to drive projects across the finish line on schedule and within budget.

Requirements

  • Minimum 12+ years of experience leading technical scope and engineering programs for HV substations (345kV–500kV) and MV collection systems within an IPP, Utility, EPC, or engineering firm.
  • Proven experience managing EPCs, consultants, major equipment vendors, and cross-functional teams through a project's lifecycle.
  • Direct experience with FACTS & Series Compensation, including fixed series capacitors for high-voltage transmission lines, SVCs, STATCOMs, and other Flexible AC Transmission Systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of NERC PRC & MOD standards and regional requirements (CAISO, ERCOT) related to transmission facility and operational compliance.
  • Deep understanding of HV/MV equipment, protection and control schemes, metering, substation SCADA, and design trade-offs (technical vs. cost vs. schedule).
  • Solid foundation in power system studies and working knowledge of steady-state modeling tools (ETAP, SKM, DIgSILENT, CDEGS, Aspen, or similar).
  • Advanced Excel skills for technical, performance, and financial analysis.
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE).
  • Bachelors in Electrical Engineering (or related field); Masters or PhD is a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • PE (Professional Engineer) license is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical program lifecycle for the design, engineering, and execution of HV substations and switchyards (115kV–500kV), ensuring all designs strictly adhere to interconnecting utility standards and specifications.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison between internal teams, utilities, equipment vendors, and EPCs to manage utility interconnection requirements, design approvals, and switchyard handover processes.
  • Drive clear Divisions of Responsibility (DOR) matrices between the IPP, EPCs, and interconnecting utilities to solidify technical boundaries and delivery schedules.
  • Continuously audit program health to identify engineering or execution gaps and deploy proactive countermeasures to ensure successful switchyard energization and handover.
  • Direct EPCs, Engineers of Record, and consultants to optimize substation and transmission designs, reduce execution risk, and maintain schedule and cost targets.
  • Own the utility interconnection scope, including the technical review of applications, steady-state/dynamic models, and technical negotiations with ISOs and utilities (e.g.,CAISO, ERCOT).
  • Provide NERC and regional regulatory (CAISO/ERCOT) compliance support, ensuring operational readiness and adherence to PRC, MOD, and related standards.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, technical specifications, EPC exhibits, and testing protocols.
  • Witness and evaluate FAT/SAT, commissioning, and energization activities.
  • Support EPC RFPs and supply agreements by defining enforceable technical requirements and evaluating vendor proposals.
  • Contribute to Independent Engineer (IE) diligence and technical documentation for project financing.
