About The Position

The Office of the Speaker of the House is currently hiring for the position of Senior Health Policy Advisor. The ideal candidate has a passion for public service, the ability to think critically, is skilled at synthesizing information succinctly and can work independently and as part of a team. This is a full-time, year-round partisan position working under Democratic leadership. The anticipated salary range for this position is $86,000-$105,000 (Grade 7 of the Legislative Salary Schedule) depending on skills and experience; salary is accompanied by a strong state employee benefits package including health insurance, dental insurance, paid vacation and sick time, retirement benefits and paid parental leave. The bi-weekly dollar values of some State-paid benefits for full-time employees include $15.22 for dental insurance; 14.06% of employee’s pay towards retirement; and at least 85% ($508.90) of health insurance premiums.

Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced research and analysis on past and present legislation to provide the Speaker of the House, Committee Chairs and members with an accurate understanding of bill content and impact.
  • Assesses assignments and chooses the correct course of action, often under significant time constraints.
  • Works closely with the Chief of Staff to define objectives and set priorities.
  • Researches past and present legislation, both in Maine and nationwide, and prepares bill summaries for Committee Chairs and member review.
  • Attends public hearings and work sessions and reports back to the Speaker, Committee Chairs and members.
  • Assists with the development of bills in line with the Speaker's policy priorities, drafts public testimony, and participates in the legislative process of amending and finalizing bills in committee.
  • Regularly attends assigned committee meetings, and meetings with caucus members, legislative leaders, and others.
  • Drafts constituent communications regarding specific policy topics.
  • Assists members with the preparation of legislation for upcoming sessions and with amendments for legislation in response to committee requests.
  • Assists legislative aides and other members of caucus/leader staff on specific policy questions.
