Senior Hardware Power Engineer

Hewlett Packard Enterprise•Sunnyvale, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Senior Hardware Power Engineer is an individual contributor on Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Power Systems Development team, designing and evaluating electrical and electronic components, subsystems, and integrated circuitry for hardware power delivery. The role contributes advanced subject-matter expertise to complex product and system design work and may provide technical leadership, mentoring, and partnership across project teams. The position is based in Sunnyvale and requires working onsite at least three days per week, potentially more to meet business needs. For board-mount power, the engineer defines design requirements, selects critical components, designs and simulates power circuit blocks, captures schematics, coordinates with board-level and PCB layout engineers, and brings up and characterizes prototypes through manufacturing introduction. For front-end power systems, the engineer supports system-level concept development, prepares power-supply module functional specifications, and manages engineering development with HPE suppliers, including prototype testing, system integration, documentation, and manufacturing support. The role also prepares or reviews test plans, supervises testing, leads technical peer reviews of their work, and participates in reviews of colleagues’ work. Senior-level contributions include mentoring less experienced power engineers, developing technology initiatives, and participating in HPE’s patent application process.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of related power design engineering experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or higher.
  • Solid experience with schematic-capture and simulation tools, including SPICE.
  • Practical background with multilayer PCB layout tools and techniques.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in the overall architecture of electronic hardware for products and solutions.
  • Experience designing and integrating electronic components, integrated circuitry, and algorithms into an overall architecture.
  • Ability to evaluate and propose empirical analysis, modeling, and testing methods to validate component, circuit, and hardware designs, including thermal and emissions management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with mastery of English and the local language.
  • Ability to communicate product architectures and design proposals effectively and negotiate options at senior-management levels.
  • Ability to work onsite in Sunnyvale at least three days per week, potentially more to meet business needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Familiarity with power development CAD tools such as Cadence Sigrity PowerDC.
  • Working knowledge of communication interfaces such as I2C/PMBus.
  • Firmware design experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, develop, modify, and evaluate electrical and electronic components, subsystems, and integrated circuitry for hardware power delivery.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, design-margin analyses, and validation analyses for new and modified power-supply designs.
  • Contribute power expertise to the architecture development of new networking hardware systems.
  • Define board-mount power design requirements and select critical components.
  • Design, simulate, and capture schematics for power circuit blocks, coordinating with board-level and PCB layout engineers.
  • Bring up and characterize completed prototype designs and support their introduction to manufacturing.
  • Develop front-end power systems, including system-level concepts and power-supply module functional specifications.
  • Coordinate the full engineering development cycle with HPE suppliers, including prototype testing, system integration, documentation, and manufacturing support.
  • Prepare or review test plans and supervise tests.
  • Lead technical peer reviews of personal work and participate in reviews of other team members’ work.
  • Mentor less experienced power engineering team members.
  • Develop new technology initiatives within the group and participate in HPE’s patent application process.
  • Direct support personnel in detailed design, design testing, and prototype fabrication as needed.

Benefits
