Senior Hardware Integration Engineer

Volley Automation•Denver, CO
•$155,000 - $210,000•Onsite

About The Position

Volley Automation is hiring a Senior Hardware Integration Engineer to own the integration of its automated parking system, which includes AGVs, vertical conveyors and lifts, trays, EV charging, vehicle interchange bays, doors and safety interlocks, fire and life-safety systems, building controls, and software. The role defines interfaces and requirements, directs supplier design work, develops bespoke designs where needed, and establishes acceptance criteria and evidence of system performance. It also serves as a technical authority when systems behave differently in the field than they did during testing, diagnosing issues across engineering domains and working with supporting functions to resolve them. The engineer will own system architecture, interface control, and hardware configuration management across systems under development and those built or deployed. Responsibilities include translating customer commitments, site constraints, and building code obligations into traceable subsystem requirements; serving as the technical owner for suppliers; and ensuring conformance to protocols such as VDA5050, Modbus, OPC UA, and CAN. The role defines and judges acceptance at the bench, supplier factory, Denver test facility, and customer site, and works with architects, general contractors, and code consultants on building requirements and discrepancies. This is an individual-contributor role, not a management position. As programs grow, the engineer may set technical direction for and review the work of one or two engineers. The position is based in the Denver office five days a week and is not hybrid or remote.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 8 years developing and deploying complex electromechanical or robotic systems, including at least one system followed through into the field.
  • Deep experience with CAD tools, drawing generation, and lifecycle management.
  • Experience with configuration management best practices, processes, or systems.
  • Willingness to work in the Denver office five days a week; this is not a hybrid or remote role.
  • Demonstrated ownership of system-level architecture, including interface control documents, requirements flow-down, tolerance and error budgets, and keeping them current as designs change.
  • Experience as the technical owner of an external supplier, including writing specifications, reviewing designs, defining acceptance, managing deviations or changes, and executing change management.
  • Ability to troubleshoot across mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and operations domains and take ownership of problems between functional owners.
  • Track record of mentoring engineers, reviewing designs or architecture decisions, and helping cross-functional groups reach decisions without formal authority.
  • Working fluency with industrial communications and controls, including Modbus, OPC UA, CAN, TCP/IP, PLCs, servo and motor drives, safety-rated I/O, and depth, vision, position, temperature, and current sensing.
  • Enough Linux and Python experience to inspect logs and test hypotheses, and ability to read software engineers' work.
  • Knowledge of safety and agency certification, including hazard analysis, risk assessment, functional safety concepts, and practical requirements of UL, IEC, ISO, and CE.
  • High tolerance for ambiguity and judgment to decide when to resolve it through a decision versus a test.
  • Strong technical writing skills, including writing specifications suppliers can build to and test reports readers can act on.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced engineering degree.
  • Software development experience with ROS/ROS2, C++, and/or Python.
  • AGV/AMR fleet integration experience, particularly with VDA5050 or comparable interface protocols.
  • Experience with vertical transport and material handling, including VRCs, scissor lifts, conveyors, and relevant standards such as ASME B20.1, ISO 13849, and EN 14010.
  • EV charging experience, including automated or robotic charging, OCPP, and NFPA 70 Article 625.
  • Experience with building codes and authorities having jurisdiction, including IBC, IMC, NFPA, permit review, and alternative means and methods.
  • Experience with requirements and model-based systems engineering tools, particularly where their use supported the work rather than being mandated.
  • Automotive or vehicle integration, debugging, and troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience building engineering processes, ideally in early-stage environments.
  • Formal training or experience with problem-resolution processes.

Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain subsystem interfaces, including mechanical envelopes and tolerance stack-ups, power and grounding, signal and network topology, command and state semantics, timing, and failure behavior.
  • Own interface control documents and hardware configuration management for systems under development and systems as built or deployed.
  • Translate customer commitments, site constraints, and building code obligations into verifiable subsystem requirements and maintain requirements traceability through supplier acceptance testing.
  • Serve as the technical counterpart to AGV, vertical transport, charging, and controls suppliers from specification and RFQ through design review, factory acceptance, and warranty.
  • Evaluate supplier platforms, write buildable specifications, review designs, and manage deviations and changes.
  • Lead bespoke component or subsystem design where required, ranging from ground-up design to higher-level integration.
  • Own integration and conformance to interface specifications and protocols, documenting and containing supplier deviations at subsystem boundaries.
  • Define acceptance criteria, test plans, and evidence requirements for bench testing, supplier factories, the Denver test facility, and customer sites; assess whether results meet requirements.
  • Define building provisions and work with architects, general contractors, and code consultants when constructed conditions differ from design drawings.
  • Troubleshoot system issues across mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and operations, and support corrective action with relevant functions.
  • Set technical direction and review the work of one or two engineers as the program grows.

Benefits

  • Equity stake in Volley.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage paid up to 90% for employees and 75% for dependents.
  • 401(k) plan with matching contributions and immediate enrollment.
  • Generous paid time off.
  • Paid holidays.
  • Life and disability coverage.
