Senior Hardware Engineer

About The Position

Adtran is seeking an experienced Senior Hardware Engineer to join our Ottawa-based hardware development team. In this role, you will be responsible for the architecture, design, development, and validation of complex telecom and networking hardware platforms. You will collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams including system architecture, firmware, manufacturing, and supply chain to deliver high‑quality, scalable products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 8+ years of experience in hardware design and development of complex electronic systems
  • Strong experience with schematic capture and PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, Cadence, or similar)
  • Proven expertise in high‑speed digital design, signal integrity, and power design
  • Hands‑on experience with hardware bring‑up, debugging, and validation using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers)
  • Experience with manufacturing support, DFM/DFA, and working with external suppliers
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and documentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross‑functional environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing telecom, networking, or broadband access equipment
  • Familiarity with optical, RF, or high‑bandwidth Ethernet technologies
  • Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems
  • Prior experience in a global or distributed engineering organization
  • Knowledge of reliability testing, environmental testing, and regulatory standards

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of high‑speed digital, mixed‑signal, and power electronics for networking and telecommunications products
  • Own full hardware development lifecycle from concept, requirements, and schematic design through layout, prototype bring‑up, validation, and production release
  • Perform board‑level design including component selection, high‑speed interfaces (Ethernet, SERDES), power distribution, EMC/EMI, and signal integrity
  • Guide PCB layout reviews and work closely with layout engineers and contract manufacturers
  • Develop and execute hardware validation and reliability test plans
  • Troubleshoot complex hardware issues during bring‑up, manufacturing, and field deployment
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers
  • Collaborate with firmware, software, mechanical, and systems teams to ensure overall product success
  • Support regulatory compliance and certifications as required (FCC, CE, UL, etc.)
