Requirements

  • 7+ years of work experience in the group insurance/financial services industry
  • Proven knowledge of group benefits products, contractual provisions, risk assessment, and pricing methodologies with a proven ability to apply knowledge in practice
  • Demonstrated experience and comfortability in interacting with group sales and service environments
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Well-developed customer relations skills
  • GBA or CEBS Designation
  • Completion of a university degree or college diploma in a relevant field
  • Financial analysis & trend analysis
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Ability to think logically, analyze, and provide creative solutions
  • Ability to prioritize competing priorities while managing an ongoing workload
  • English is required for communicating with English speaking customers, advisors, or employees across Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that complex requests to quote, amendment, and renewals are assessed appropriately & accurately and within established turnaround time to support business sales and profitability objectives
  • Leads and coaches (be the “Go-To”) the underwriting development of more junior underwriters within the team
  • Acts as an informal leader within the team, supporting leadership with driving forward business initiatives and strategic objectives
  • Ensure the profitability of group business from an underwriting perspective with a focus on establishing and growing long term partnerships
  • Uses experience and judgment, in conjunction with Underwriting guidelines, product and service knowledge to determine optimal and creative solutions to meet customer needs and requirements
  • Ensure the profitability of group business through consultative underwriting practices; ensuring effective case level management at time of acquisition and renewal
  • Appropriately documents underwriting decisions to support risk and pricing decisions; and make decisions on negotiations and market rates on all case types within defined parameters
  • Leads the development and communication of process and practice changes, including maintenance of the Underwriting Guidelines and other documents relevant to the functional unit
  • Provides consistent and fulsome interpretation of group insurance policy terms to customers and distribution partners in support of strategic business objectives
  • Work collaboratively with other team members, inside and outside of underwriting to support quote, renewal and amendment outcomes to achieve strategic objectives
  • Act as a subject matter expert to provide consultation and problem resolution for the business units and the distribution teams on risk-related issues
  • Ability to constructively and extensively apply underwriting tools to experience rate Life and LTD
  • Ability to articulate underwriting and pricing recommendations to a broad set of stakeholders, including: internal teams, external teams and senior leadership
  • Proactively engages with both internal and external stakeholders to engage in discussions to support both client acquisition and retention while serving as a primary point of contact
  • Interacts with reinsurance providers to spread risks on retention amounts that exceed the Empire Life retention limit
  • Executes on consultative underwriting practices that include risk interpretation, pricing recommendation, partner collaboration while working within defined parameters
  • Acts as a primary point of contacts for key partners externally
