About The Position

For more than 50 years, Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (LSHV) has been providing free, high-quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including: eviction and foreclosure prevention, domestic violence, disability, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud and more. Our services support almost 600,000 poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney in our seven-county service area. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services in the lower and mid-Hudson Valley (Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan), LSHV is proud to have handled over 12,000 cases impacting nearly 30,000 household members including 10,000 children last year. Requirements

  • Three or more years of similar experience, preferably within the not-for-profit sector, including an understanding of fund accounting in an organization with multiple funds
  • Bachelor’s degree; degree in Accounting, preferred
  • Basic understanding of accounting systems (experience with Fund EZ or similar not-for-profit accounting system is desirable, but not required)
  • Experience and competency with Microsoft Office programs especially Excel
  • Very strong communications and interpersonal skills to interact with staff and funders
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to set and meet deadlines

Nice To Haves

  • experience with Fund EZ or similar not-for-profit accounting system is desirable, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Prepares financial reports by funder for reimbursement of services provided and expenses incurred on behalf of program
  • Takes primary responsibility for reporting of actual expenses and activities to individual grant funders and updating forecasts vs budget subsequent to each voucher submission. Leads the process collaborating with Grants and Program to draft budget modifications where necessary to submit to individual grants to ensure that all funds will be expended.
  • Assists Assistant Director of Finance in reconciling Legal Server and payroll reports and ensures they are meeting the budgeted amount in the grant
  • Requests supporting documentation from accounts payable in the format that is required by the funder and compiles all required documentation for submission to Grant Funders.
  • Supports Assistant Director of Finance in preparing a monthly report at the allocation meeting to highlight any discrepancies to proactively address any reporting shortfall vs Legal Server reports.
  • Updates Grants and Program regarding any needed changes or differences to forecast expenditures that will affect the contract.
  • Interacts with Sub-Contractors to ensure that all reports are submitted on a timely basis
  • Submits payment requests for reimbursement of funders timely and accurately
  • Reviews and analyzes grant-related general ledger activity to ensure expenditures are properly allocated, accurately recorded, and compliant with funder requirements; identifies and coordinates any needed adjustments to support accurate financial reporting and reimbursement requests.
  • Monitors grant expenditures and financial activity to ensure compliance with funder guidelines, contract requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Follows up with funders regarding payment
  • Prepares budget for new and existing funders
  • Ensures budgets and budget modifications are entered in a timely manner to the General Ledger software
  • Assists others in Finance and Accounting department, as needed
