About The Position

Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd. (KCB) is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join their Mining Environmental Group in Phoenix, AZ. This role will support and lead geotechnical aspects of mining projects, with a focus on tailings storage facilities (TSFs), mine waste, and water management. The position offers a hybrid work arrangement and the opportunity to contribute to complex, large-scale global projects. The role involves leading and supporting the design, construction, operation, and closure of tailings storage facilities, performing risk assessments, dam safety evaluations, and risk-based decision-making. The engineer will collaborate with clients, internal teams, and external partners, conduct geotechnical analyses (slope stability, seepage), oversee site investigations, laboratory testing, and earthworks. Additionally, the role includes mentoring junior staff, developing client relationships, utilizing industry-standard software, and participating in professional development opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering (or related discipline)
  • 10+ years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience, preferably in mining
  • Eligibility for Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in the United States
  • Located in Phoenix, AZ, or willing to relocate
  • Demonstrated experience with dam design, slope stability, seepage analysis, and site investigation
  • Strong understanding of soil and rock mechanics, including laboratory and field testing
  • Experience working in safety-focused environments with incident reporting requirements
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the design, construction, operation, and closure of tailings storage facilities
  • Perform and contribute to risk assessments, dam safety evaluations, and risk-based decision-making
  • Collaborate with clients, internal teams, and external partners on field programs and engineering solutions
  • Conduct geotechnical analyses, including slope stability and seepage assessments
  • Oversee site investigations, laboratory testing, and earthworks activities
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and staff
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships throughout project lifecycles
  • Utilize industry-standard software and tools for analysis and design
