Senior Geospatial Engineer

Xylo RiskSan Francisco, CA

About The Position

XyloPlan builds physics-based, community-scale wildfire risk modeling and simulation tools. Our Fire Pathways Architecture helps fire agencies, insurance carriers, reinsurers, utilities, and municipalities understand and reduce wildfire risk at the parcel level. We are a seed-stage company preparing for Series A in Q4 2026. We are looking for a Senior Geospatial Engineer to own the platforms around running and rendering our simulations. You will own the data pipelines that transform raw geospatial data (terrain, vegetation, structure footprints, weather) into the inputs for our physics models. Your work will continue through the fire simulations and you will also own the outputs of the models and the rendering methods to the end users. This role directly impacts our ability to deliver parcel-level risk scores and urban conflagration modeling to insurance carrier customers.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional experience in geospatial engineering, GIS development, or spatial data science
  • Strong proficiency in Python with geospatial libraries (GeoPandas, Rasterio, GDAL, Shapely)
  • Experience with large-scale raster and vector data processing pipelines
  • Familiarity with cloud-based geospatial infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
  • Experience with PostGIS or similar spatial databases
  • Demonstrated ability to work with messy, real-world geospatial datasets from multiple sources

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with wildfire modeling, fire behavior simulation, or natural hazard risk assessment
  • Background in remote sensing, LiDAR processing, or satellite imagery analysis
  • Experience in an early-stage startup environment
  • Knowledge of insurance or reinsurance industry data requirements
  • Experience with React and front-end mapping libraries (e.g. Mapbox, ArcGIS, MapLibre)

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain geospatial data pipelines that process terrain, vegetation, fuel, structure, and weather datasets
  • Integrate diverse geospatial data sources (e.g LANDFIRE, parcel data, building data, roads, historic fires) into a unified processing framework
  • Collaborate with the R&D team on physics-based fire spread simulation and the development of tooling for validation of geospatial outputs against observed fire behavior
  • Support customer-facing deliverables including Vulnerability Assessments and Community Mitigation Plans
  • Contribute to technical architecture decisions as the engineering team scales

Benefits

  • Health, dental, vision, unlimited PTO
  • 401(k) available
