The Senior Genetic Counselor maintains a clinical practice while promoting the growth of the genetic services at Sanford either directly or through referrals. They have advanced skills in counseling and skills that have proven them to be an expert in their specialty. This role involves developing and maintaining a clinical practice alongside physicians and providers, gathering patient information, assessing recurrence risks, recommending medical or genetic testing, conducting case research, educating patients and health professionals, reviewing implications with patients, providing crisis intervention, and communicating genetic test results. Senior Genetic Counselors also take on additional responsibilities in program development, coordination, and administration, promoting program services, monitoring referral sources, and engaging in active mentoring and professional development. They may also answer media requests and assist with the development of written materials with a genetic component. Additionally, they play a direct role in university genetic counseling programs, instructing classes, supervising projects, or clinical rotations.
