Senior FPGA Design Engineer

RTX•Fort Wayne, IN
•$86,800 - $165,200•Onsite

About The Position

The Multi-Product Power & Digital (MPD) department designs FPGAs, circuit cards, and electronics subassemblies for products including missiles/effectors, radars, and electronic warfare systems. It uses digital, analog, and power design expertise to support products from architecture and design through production and sustainment. The Senior FPGA Design Engineer will develop FPGA solutions for sensor and effector products, working with multidisciplinary teams to define requirements, develop architectures, complete detailed designs and simulations, and perform integration and verification. The engineer will document designs using configuration management tools and provide engineering support throughout the product lifecycle. This is an onsite role in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and requires an active DoD Secret clearance after the first day. U.S. citizenship is required.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a STEM degree and at least 5 years of prior relevant experience.
  • Experience in FPGA/ASIC design using VHDL and/or Verilog, or FPGA/ASIC verification using SystemVerilog.
  • Experience with AMD (Xilinx), Altera, and/or Microchip (Microsemi) devices and tools such as AMD Vivado, Altera Quartus Prime Pro, or Libero.
  • Hands-on experience integrating and debugging FPGA/ASIC designs in a lab environment.
  • Experience with timing closure, clock-domain crossing and reset-domain crossing analysis, and constraint development.
  • Experience with source code management, design reviews, and code release in a team development environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • An active and existing DoD Secret clearance is required after day one.

Nice To Haves

  • One or more advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM major; a suitable degree may count as two years of work experience.
  • FPGA/ASIC design experience in radar processing techniques.
  • FPGA/ASIC design experience in image processing for visual and infrared sensors.
  • Embedded systems design experience using ARM, MicroBlaze, or NIOS processors.
  • Experience with gigabit serial interfaces and multi-gigabit transceivers (MGTs).
  • Experience with constrained-random verification in UVM using SystemVerilog.
  • Experience with High Level Synthesis (HLS).
  • Experience with vector processors and/or GPUs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams in meeting schedule, budget, and technical commitments.
  • Experience with project management tools such as Earned Value and/or Agile Execution.
  • Proposal development experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide full lifecycle support for production-quality FPGA designs across major vendors and device families, including AMD (Xilinx), Altera, and Microchip (Microsemi), using tools such as AMD Vivado, Altera Quartus Prime Pro, or Libero.
  • Generate FPGA designs for gigabit serial interfaces, RF DSP, controls, data links, embedded processing, and processor interfaces.
  • Support translation of system-level requirements into FPGA requirements.
  • Architect FPGA-based systems and determine parts, interfaces, and Concepts of Operations (CONOPS).
  • Lead FPGA designs and VHDL code development for reliability and maintainability.
  • Verify designs using self-checking techniques, directed and constrained-random tests, and functional and code coverage tracking.
  • Define schedules for FPGA tasks and drive execution within planned budget and schedule.
  • Create requirements, verification plans, user guides, and other design documentation.
  • Lead individual designs and/or small teams and operate with minimal oversight from the manager.
  • Support internal and external technical reviews.
  • Participate in knowledge transfer and mentor junior engineers.
