About The Position

The Senior Financial Analyst is an experienced financial professional who supports the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) in advancing the New England Aquarium's budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and performance management functions. As a key member of the FP&A team, this role performs advanced financial analysis, develops forecasting models and dashboards, prepares KPI and management reporting, and partners across departments to support data-informed decision-making and organizational financial sustainability. The position also supports financial systems, business intelligence reporting, capital and fixed asset accounting, and process improvement initiatives that strengthen financial operations and organizational effectiveness. Working collaboratively with Finance leadership and operational managers, the Senior Financial Analyst provides deep analytical and operational support that helps extend the FP&A function throughout the organization. This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will be Monday-Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm with the option for a hybrid schedule, working some days on-site and some days remotely. Remote days are only available for residents of MA, RI, NH, ME, NY and VT.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 7 - 10 years of progressively responsible experience in financial analysis, FP&A, accounting, or business analytics required.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and FASB standards, including financial statement relationships, cash flow analysis, and operational impacts on financial reporting.
  • Experience developing forecasts, KPIs, dashboards, and management reporting tools required.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including financial modeling, pivot tables, complex formulas, and data analysis techniques required.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to interpret complex financial and operational data.
  • Strong understanding of budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial planning methodologies.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences.

  • Experience with nonprofit accounting, restricted funds, grants management, or mission-driven organizations preferred.
  • Proficiency with Power Query a plus.
  • Familiarity with MIP Fund Accounting, Raiser's Edge NXT, Power BI, Tableau, Microix, or ticketing/point-of-sale systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support and coordinate the annual operating budget process, including development of budget templates, consolidation of departmental submissions, validation of data integrity, and preparation of supporting schedules and analyses.
  • Partner with department managers to monitor budget performance and support informed financial decision-making.
  • Prepare recurring and ad hoc financial forecasts, scenario analyses, and long-range planning models to support organizational decision-making and strategic initiatives.
  • Build and maintain financial models supporting operating performance, admissions, earned & contributed revenue, labor, cash flow, and capital planning.
  • Assist the Director of FP&A in developing assumptions, methodologies, and planning tools.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial reporting packages, including budget-to-actual analyses, KPI summaries, trend reporting, and variance explanations.
  • Analyze financial and operational data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities that support decision-making and organizational performance.
  • Prepare schedules, reports, and presentation materials for finance leadership, executive leadership, board committees, lenders, auditors, and other stakeholders.
  • Support quarterly and year-end financial reporting processes, including preparation of GAAP-based reporting schedules and audit support documentation.
  • Perform ad hoc financial analysis and modeling to support strategic initiatives and organizational priorities.
  • Develop and maintain KPIs, dashboards, and performance reporting tools aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Support the development and maintenance of Business Intelligence platforms and data models, including Power BI, Tableau, and related databases.
  • Standardize reporting definitions and metric calculations to improve consistency, transparency, and usability across the organization.
  • Support administration and continuous improvement of financial planning, purchasing, budgeting, and reporting systems.
  • Partner with Finance, Information Technology, and operational departments to improve data integrity, reporting accuracy, and system functionality.
  • Support reconciliation and reporting related to ticketing, admissions, and operational systems to ensure accurate financial reporting and data integrity.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for automation, process improvement, and workflow efficiency within FP&A and cross-functional financial processes.
  • Maintain and validate key financial and operational data used for forecasting, reporting, and analysis.
  • Support capital project tracking, fixed asset accounting, and construction-in-progress reporting, including monitoring asset additions, disposals, and project coding.
  • Prepare monthly depreciation and amortization calculations, fixed asset reconciliations, roll-forward schedules, and audit support documentation.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and ensure compliance with capitalization policies and accounting standards.
  • Serve as a trusted financial resource and collaborative business partner to managers and department leaders throughout the organization.
  • Communicate financial concepts, trends, and results to non-financial audiences.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects and organizational initiatives requiring financial analysis, operational modeling, reporting support, or business process evaluation.
  • Perform other position-related duties and special projects as assigned.
