About The Position

Rivian is seeking an experienced Senior Field Service Technician to serve as a technical expert and leader supporting complex vehicle repairs and field operations. The role calls for an adaptable, team-oriented technician who can drive continuous improvement, mentor junior team members, and resolve challenging diagnostic issues in a fast-paced environment. The position is based primarily at a service center, but may also involve remote work, travel to remote locations, or support at production plants as business needs require. The technician will perform advanced vehicle diagnostics, repairs, installations, and inspections; provide technical guidance and troubleshooting to field teams; and use specialized diagnostic equipment to resolve complex electrical, high-voltage, and network faults. The role also includes mentoring technicians, standardizing repair processes, overseeing parts operations, documenting findings, and collaborating with customers, suppliers, engineers, and other internal teams. Candidates will be evaluated on advanced technical capabilities and leadership skills across high-voltage and low-voltage systems, chassis and drivability, thermal and HVAC systems, and ADAS and body/glass integration. The role requires a standard 40-hour workweek, with availability for weekends, holidays, and varying shifts as needed, as well as regional or production-plant travel.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record, with no suspensions or revocations within the past 3–5 years.
  • Availability for a standard 40-hour workweek, including weekends, holidays, early mornings, evenings, or overnight shifts as required.
  • Ability to travel to regional locations or production plants as needed.
  • Proficiency in Windows/Mac environments, work order management systems, and specialized engineering and diagnostic documentation systems.
  • Physical capability to perform occupational tasks involving sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • State mechanic certifications where required by jurisdiction.
  • Extensive experience in bumper-to-bumper automotive diagnostics; 5 to 8+ years of automotive repair experience is preferred.
  • 3 to 8+ years of hands-on experience working on vehicle high-voltage systems and high-voltage diagnostic work.
  • Deep understanding of high-voltage architecture, HVIL, charging isolation, and safe power-down protocols using appropriate PPE; ability to diagnose complex high-voltage faults and isolation issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of automotive electronics, CAN and LIN bus communication, electrical schematics, and precise wiring harness repairs.
  • Mastery of chassis service, including alignments and braking systems, and advanced diagnosis of ABS, traction control, power steering, and NVH concerns.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of HVAC systems, coolant drain/fill operations, A/C machine usage, 609 refrigerant certification, and thermal-management troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in ADAS calibration and replacing or adjusting sensors, body panels, and glass to manufacturer tolerances.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma, GED, or recognized equivalency credential.
  • Graduation from an accredited automotive repair school or vocational program.
  • Ability to drive a non-commercial truck and trailer.
  • Experience in a leadership or supervisory role, such as Shop Foreman, Team Lead, or Technical Mentor.
  • Demonstrated background in continuous improvement, process standardization, and escalation management.

Responsibilities

  • Perform bumper-to-bumper diagnostics, complex repairs, installations, and inspections at service centers and in field settings, including customer sites, mobile routes, and remote locations.
  • Provide high-level diagnostic guidance to field service teams and perform remote diagnostics or repairs when issues can be safely addressed without local vehicle access, using logged vehicle data and technical schematics.
  • Coach, mentor, and train junior technicians and internal partners; foster cross-functional collaboration and lead shop-floor technical problem-solving.
  • Use specialized diagnostic tools, including PICO-Scope, PCAN, Kavaser Memorator, and breakout boxes, to resolve complex electrical, high-voltage, and network faults.
  • Conduct road tests to verify repair quality, champion continuous improvement, and promote high standards across repair workflows.
  • Oversee complex parts operations, including ordering, receiving, inventory management, and billing.
  • Create high-quality documentation in service support and engineering systems; provide root-cause analysis and actionable feedback to field service engineers and leadership.
  • Interact professionally with customers, suppliers, and internal teams during escalations and mobile outreach events.
